Debora B. F. Kayembe Presents AFTER SO LONG... on Africa's Fears and Woes

First-time author and human rights advocate Debora B. F. Kayembe publishes a powerfully inspiring and evocative debut novel entitled "After So Long..." Kayembe's new book revolves around the controversial themes like persecution, martyrdom, war and survival. These themes are set against the backdrop of modern-day conflicts between two major religions - Christianity and Islam.

"The inspiration came from the reality of extremism around the world. I thought about the victims and what happened to them after they have faced the ordeal for persecution," shares Kayembe. "There is also the need of recognizing the survivors of the violence, as a result of terrorism, wherever they come from."

The fictional story takes place in Ethiopia. It primarily revolves around the lives of two main characters, a couple of women who wrote letters to one another. These two women who bare their soul in their letters make the story highly dramatic and very humane. They write about the events which led them to undertake their mission, what happened during the mission, and how the outcome of that mission changed their lives forever.

Three young men and women are travelling in a country torn apart by war. They go to support and assist the victims of war between the Christians and the Muslims. With a dangerous mission like theirs, three survive while one dies. The book details the noble yet risky mission of the volunteers and captures the human emotions in such traumatic events. Throughout the story, Kayembe teaches courage and sacrifice, faith and forgiveness.

With news like the Westgate Mall attack in Kenya which targeted Christians, and the killing of 85 Christians in a Peshawar, Pakistan suicide attack, "After So Long . . ." is a novel with a deeply resonating humanity. It is an eye-opening novel that unveils the atrocity of extremism, the unknown scenarios of war in Africa, the vibrancy of the near-forgotten world of civilized African society, and explains the ordeal that many civilized Africans face.

Debora B. F. Kayembe lives in Scotland. She was born and raised in Kinshasa at the Democratic Republic of Congo. She attended university and obtained a higher diploma in international law. A mother of two children, Kayembe spent most of her time working as a lawyer-linguist and Human Right Advocate in the United Kingdom. While living in the Congo, she worked at the Congolese bar as a barrister and with various national and international human rights organisations.
