SAVANNAH, Ga.

After her son was diagnosed with autism, author Dawn Adams spent many hours researching, attending seminars and speaking with others to learn more about how best to help her son. In her new book, "The Needs of Billy and Other Autistic Children" (published by AuthorHouse), Adams shares what she's learned, including two stories for reading, advice on toys and devices for helping autistic children learn.

Adams voices her concerns over special needs' teachers' stretched-thin and uninformed time spent with children whom she says require a fair amount of repetition to learn any subject. She encourages parents to play an active role in their children's education and use "The Needs of Billy and Other Autistic Children" as a tool for supplementing their education at home using the teaching methods Adams herself has used successfully

"The Needs of Billy and Other Autistic Children" includes two stories for use with teaching autistic children as well as recommendations for toys to be used to increase strength and fine and oral motor skills. The author also presents readers with colorful drawings to help children learn to identify and differentiate animals, fruit, street signs, toys, clothing items, musical instruments and more to aid parents in helping their children succeed.
