PLEASANT PRAIRIE, Wis.

Author Craig Swanson promotes the release of his new book, "The Selma Campaign: Martin Luther King Jr., Jimmie Lee Jackson, and the Defining Struggle of the Civil Rights Era" (published by Archway Publishing), as the 50th anniversary celebration of the 1965 Selma to Montgomery marches draws near and the movie "Selma" gains traction with one Golden Globe award and four nominations.

"The Selma Campaign" begins in 1965 Selma and continues through present-day Selma, telling a meticulously reported story of triumph and tragedy, of risks taken and lessons learned. Swanson draws from personal interviews, police reports, court documents, contemporaneous accounts and existing literature to provide readers with what he says is the definitive word on Selma.

"Selma was a complicated campaign that overcame many political obstacles and racial divisions thanks not only to the leadership of Martin Luther King, but also to the many 'foot soldiers,' average citizens who risked everything for the right to vote," Swanson says.

A life-long student of the civil rights movement, Swanson examines life in the Deep South offering readers a compelling story as well as a history lesson depicting America at the crossroads of race relations.
