Hold back your surprise, folks. There is finally a wholesome, young adult novel out that does not contain an ounce of sex or vampires in the story line.

In Connie Gaertner's new book, "Wake-Up Calls," she tells a story of a teenage girl navigating the unsteady waters of young love and responsibility.

Set in the Great Lakes during the heat of summer break, the reader will go on an adventure filled with boating, beach parties and tough decisions that could determine a young person's entire future.

The story's 17-year-old main character, Krista, finds that she has developed strong feelings for two different men and ultimately has to make a decision on which path to take.

Gaertner was drawn to write for young adults because she often worried about how easily they can be influenced.

"By writing this book, and the ones to follow, I hope to encourage a young person to think beyond the moment," Gaertner said. "Observe, listen, don't be afraid to ask questions, develop self-confidence and like who you are."
