LONDON

Many spy novels can deliver a thrilling roller coaster of a story, but often throw the more important subtle and emotional elements out of the cart. The elements of a dramatic and entangling tale are abandoned in favour of a fast-paced story that ultimately lacks a deeper meaning or substance.

This is what Michelle Medhat avoided in writing "Connected: The Call," the first book in a series of two that details the journey of Sam Noor, a brilliant but roguish MI6 counter-terrorism field operative. Although his main focus is to take down a terrorist organization that is gripping the entire world in a stranglehold, Sam also has to keep his wife in the dark about his troubling and dangerous occupation.

Things become complicated after a series of assassinations and the revelation of mysterious technologies force Sam to confess to his wife, pushing her - an incapable participant - into the deadly game of intrigue.

The riveting and stomach churning action of "Connected: The Call" gives readers a fast-paced story they will find hard to put down. However, what really makes the book special is its attention to detail regarding advanced technologies.

"Having worked in science, engineering and technology fields over the past 24 years, I have developed a good grounding in the technologies that are possible," Medhat said. "This has enabled me to develop tech we are likely to really see in the future; in the areas of nanotechnology, bio-engineered drugs and quantum engineering."

Taking the parallels of the real world along with the world of "Connected," Medhat explores interesting and troubling issues like the capabilities of government surveillance, the freedom of information and how we all affect each other's lives. It is through the connections that she draws in the novel that makes "Connected: The Call" arrest the attention of readers looking for a thrill.
