CAMBRIDGE, MA - Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, today announced the upcoming publication of a new major reference work, Comprehensive Materials Finishing, edited by Saleem Hashmi. The three-volume set brings together all known research in materials finishing in a single reference for the first time. Elsevier announced three additional new materials science and engineering books also available next month.

With a mixture of review articles, case studies and findings from research and development activities in industrial and academic domains, Comprehensive Materials Finishing focuses on how certain finish manufacturing processes are advantageous for a broad range of technologies, due to their applicability, energy and technological costs as well as practicability of implementation. The work covers a wide range of materials such as ferrous, non-ferrous and polymeric.

Volume 1, "Finish Machining and Net Forming," was edited by Imtiaz A. Choudhury of the University of Malaya in Malaysia. Shahjahan Mridha, of the University of Strathclyde, in the U.K., edited Volume 2, "Surface Treatments." Volume 3, "Surface Coating Processes," was edited by Bekir Yilbas of King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals in Saudi Arabia.

Set editor Saleem Hashmi is emeritus professor in the School of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering at Dublin City University, Ireland. He founded the school in 1987, and also set up the Material Processing Research Centre (MPRC), a research center of excellence in the field of material processing. Professor Hashmi established Advances in Materials and Processing Technologies (AMPT) in 1990, a much-needed international conference in materials processing. He continues to be the chairperson of the Steering Committee for this series of conferences. Dr. Hashmi was appointed editor-in-chief of Elsevier's "Journal of Materials Processing Technology" in 1998, a position he held until 2008. In 1995, Professor Hashmi was awarded the higher doctorate degree of DSc, by the University of Manchester, the highest academic degree any university in the UK can award. He has published more than 430 papers and 12 books to date.

The four new materials science and engineering titles available next month are:

In order to meet content needs in materials science and engineering, Elsevier uses proprietary tools to identify the gaps in coverage of the topics. Editorial teams strategically fill those gaps with content written by key influencers in the field, giving students, faculty and researchers the content they need to answer challenging questions and improve outcomes. These new books, which will educate the next generation of materials scientists and engineers and provide critical foundational content for information professionals, are key examples of how Elsevier is enabling science to drive innovation.
