As many as 20 percent of all students grades 9-12 suffer from bullying, reports the Centers for Disease Control - and that's only one of the many problems high school students face on a daily basis.

Author Chelsey Guy, an 18-year-old high school senior from Columbus, GA, has suffered significant struggles related to bullying. Rather than let them bring her down, she channels these challenges into inspiration for other young adults in her new novel, "The Kindling Muse" (published by Abbott Press).

"The Kindling Muse" is set in a modern high school with modern issues. The story follows a young girl struggling with bullying, health issues, violence in school, foster care and a flawed education system.

Within the story, Guy adds a heavy dose of mythological flare: recurring dreams, mystery cures that come at a price, an unexplainable draw to fire, love, betrayal and the question of fate versus choice.

"I have experienced a lot of hardship in school," says Guy. "I decided I wanted to share my struggles with other young people, but I wanted to be creative with the story; that is why I have thrown my passion for Greek mythology into the mix."
