Author C. J. Barnes shares a selection of tales and anecdotes about growing up in a small, rural Southern community in her new memoir, "Retold Tales: A Collection of Treasured Memories" (published by iUniverse).

"I was inspired to write 'Retold Tales' for several reasons, mainly to record events and family stories for my children and future generations," Barnes says. "I want my children to know how I grew up and want them to experience through my stories what it was like growing up in a small town in the rural South."

Written as a series of standalone short stories, "Retold Tales" chronicles the history of the Lee and Faison families from Duplin County, N.C. Intertwined by marriage, the two families faced similar circumstances in the challenges of living in pre-desegregation in rural North Carolina and integrated Connecticut in the early 1960s, challenges that are recounted in the pages of "Retold Tales."

Reminiscing about holidays, relatives, special events and more, Barnes uses humor and descriptive details to capture her family's stories and history. Their lives provide insight into the life and times of a bygone era, and this book helps preserve the tales of the past.
