Author Brian M. Sinclair takes readers on an international journey as he chronicles his prestigious engineering career in his new memoir, "Quitting the Welfare State: and-Friday the 13th." (published by AuthorHouse).

Born and raised in New Zealand, Sinclair spent the first 27 years of his life there. He looks back at his traumatic childhood and how those experiences forced him to fend for himself at a young age, relying on no one for guidance or assistance. He worked for the British Petroleum Company and was able to put himself through school to obtain a civil engineering degree.

In 1956, Sinclair decided to leave New Zealand and traveled across the Pacific, down through Central and South America and ended up in Brazil "with not a penny in my pocket," he recalls. It was there that he began his professional career, and he was soon working as a construction and consulting engineer.

Sinclair spent nearly 60 years living and working in Brazil, and his job often took him to other countries in Central and South America. "Quitting the Welfare State" follows him through the years as he recollects on his travels, the people he met and the things he learned.

One of Sinclair's most notable achievements was his appointment as New Zealand's first ever Honorary Consul and later Consul General, and he chronicles the 15 years he spent in those positions. Throughout the book, he explains that while he's never regretted leaving New Zealand, he's always retained close connections with the country of his birth.
