In her new Regency mystery novel "Friend at Court: A Ruth Bowen Regency Mystery" (published by Trafford Publishing), author Brenda Dow presents the story of a Quaker woman confronting a stern but eccentric judge while trying to prove the innocence of a deaf serving girl charged with theft and attempted murder and later accused of murder itself.

Regency mysteries, those mysteries set during the Regency period of English history (1811-1820), are often written in a Jane Austen-style of prose, which draws in readers from all walks of life.

When Quaker Ruth Bowen returns home to reconcile with her estranged family, she does not expect to run afoul of an eccentric judge of the King's Bench and to find herself confined in Norwich Castle prison. She must solve the mystery of why a deaf maidservant was summarily dismissed from her employment and later brought up on trumped-up charges of theft and attempted murder. Can the girl be a threat to someone in that household?

Much of the draw of "Friend at Court" is found in its characters, who are products of their time and the cultures they come from. The pacifistic nature of the Society of Friends (Quakers) is at war with the cruelty of early 19th century law.
