Book Features Life of Author's Mother

"The Daughter Who Sold Her Mother" (published by AuthorHouse UK) is the memoir about the life of the author's mother. Irena Powell records the stories she has heard from her mother and those that she has experienced personally.

"I am an academic by profession and have a number of academic publications, which has ensured that the historical background to this book is well researched and presented," the author says.

Her mother is a Holocaust survivor, a young mother who struggled to save herself and her daughter (the author) in Poland under German occupation. Aside from being a victim of the Holocaust, Powell also highlights her mother as a full person, including her childhood and youth. The author continues the story into the postwar period to indicate how politics of the communist regime in postwar Poland altered the course of people's lives and led to emigration.

"My mother's life story illustrates how Poland as a country failed its Jewish national minority before, during and after the Second World War," she adds.

"The Daughter Who Sold Her Mother" is written in simple language, providing only as much of the historical background as was deemed necessary in order not to disrupt the flow of the story. Powell's intention was to make it more accessible to readers, particularly to younger readers, who would be less familiar with the complex history of 20th century Europe.

About the Author
Irena Powell was born in Lvov (present-day Ukraine) in 1941 to Polish-Jewish parents and survived the war in Nazi-occupied Poland. Educated in the post-war communist period, she graduated from the University of Warsaw with a double degree in Japanese and English studies. She came to St. Antony's College, Oxford, England, in 1967, where she completed the master of letter postgraduate degree at the Faculty of Oriental Studies. She taught Japanese language and literature at the universities of Oxford and Sheffield and is the author of a monograph, "Writers and Society in Modern Japan," published by Macmillan (1983), as well as a number of academic articles.
