SANTA BARBARA, Calif.

Author and amateur photographer Bill Bolton lived in France from 1991 to 1993. While he saw many landmarks and beautiful landscapes, one thing in particular intrigued him: the diversity of illuminated pedestrian crossing signs, also referred to as piétons.

Bolton took numerous photos of the signs, which he enjoyed so much he put them on display in California in 2012. He now brings his gallery to an even bigger audience, with his new photo book " In Search of Piétons: a photo documentary" (published by Lulu).

In his book, Bolton presents readers with 25 uniquely different illuminated pedestrian crossing signs he discovered while in France. Each photo represents a double exposure technique in order to capture both the red and green figures on the same color film frame. Bolton also includes active links to Google Maps, so that readers can transport themselves to the exact street location of each sign.

"This book about pedestrians is anything but pedestrian," Bolton says. "It is multifaceted in that it covers detailed photographic techniques, an interesting and distinctive collection of double exposure photographs on color film all taken at night, unique adventures and descriptive details documenting the discovery process."

Bolton hopes that readers will enjoy the images of the signs, but more importantly, feel encouraged to explore, to go by foot and to roam about. He says that it is not only healthy, but also may lead to surprising discoveries. Ultimately he hopes his book will encourage readers to: "Live Life Explore More."
