Barbara Whitman Shares Her Experience Being a Caregiver for Her... "In My Shoes: By "Mo," an Alzheimer Wife" (published by LifeRich Publishing) spans a 12-year period of Barbara Whitman caring for her husband, Gerald, while he had Alzheimer's. The book is available for purchase at: https://www.amazon.com/My-Shoes-Mo-Alzheimer-Wife/dp/1489717722.

Whitman shares how, although she had heard of Alzheimer's before, she didn't fully understand the illness or what it would mean for her family when her husband was diagnosed with it. Over the following 12 years Whitman learned how to meet his needs. Because of her lack of knowledge, she hopes to provide insight to other caregivers, and help others to understand Alzheimer's a little better.

In addition, Whitman shares some tips for people who know someone with Alzheimer's:

  •     Seeking medical guidance early on helps extend the person's quality life.
  •     Caregivers should be loving, supportive, patient and realistic as the disease progresses.
  •     Being a caregiver comes with a wide spectrum emotions.

"Caring for someone with the disease is an unknown territory for most of us; it can be frightening to take on," Whitman states. "With understanding, one may be able to take on this caregiving task, or maybe one should not try to do it."
