Laboratory director Ikpe O. Vitalis shares knowledge from his 29 years working in a regional burn center in his new book, "Burns" (published by Partridge Africa), a tool to help people from all walks of life should they ever encounter a burn injury.

"Burns" highlights the causes and different types of burn injuries, stating assessment and management as well as treatment costs. Vitalis provides information on transporting burn patients as well as the pathophysiology of, and subsequent scars from, burn injuries.

Vitalis targets not only medical professionals, but also individuals who may experience burn injuries in their homes or offices. He discusses avoidance measures so individuals can start taking the proper precautions to keep themselves safe.

An excerpt from "Burns":

"Burns management is an intensive care with a definite protocol carried out with the highest level of professionalism. There is no room for wrong decision, procrastination or negligence and all health professionals are members of the burn care team for adequate and successful treatment."
