Chantelle Taylor, a British Combat Medic, is renowned as the first female soldier to kill an enemy fighter at close quarters in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. She narrates the incredible story of the hardship that the soldiers of B Company (5 Scots) faced as a collective. Her publication, "Battleworn" (published by iUniverse), gives a rare insight into the physical and psychological struggles of soldiers at war.

A military memoir, this book reads like a soldier's journal and recounts one of the bloodiest years of the campaign. Written with humility, the narratives tone makes good the sometimes unpalatable reality of battle. Taylor tells of a routine patrol into the opium saturated district of Nad-e Ali, which escalates into a seven-week siege. The colossal underestimation of Taliban fighters in the area would push every soldier to take up arms against an unrelenting enemy. Humble and inspiring, the epic account lends itself to an action-packed and emotive screenplay. The story has yet to be pitched with the author remaining agent-free.

"My father made me strong enough to serve my country," Taylor says. "My mother's instinct made me want to protect it."

"Battleworn" gives the reader a sharp education into the role of combat medics on the modern-day battlefield. It provides a unique addition to the current range of veteran written books on the Afghanistan war.
