WASHINGTON

As a Christian, if you believe Jesus is the truth, the way and the life, do your actions reflect that and have you been truly obedient to his commands?

Attorney and author Alec Zacaroli uses this question to keep his daily walk with Jesus in check. In his new book, "Obey: The Power of Love and Surrender," he was inspired by John 14:6 and the Bible's teachings on absolute obedience.

"I have developed through my careers an ability to write, research and analyze facts and law, all of which led me to taking a more critical view of what Christ really asks of us," Zacaroli said. "The book is a look at the Bible from an everyday man's view in some respects."

In 2003, Zacaroli and his wife, Amy, founded 25:40, a ministry dedicated to saving orphaned and vulnerable children in the poor, rural Eastern Cape province of South Africa. They now run a preschool and after-school care program in the area. In 2012, after a few years of discernment, Zacaroli decided to obey what God was trying to tell him and take a leave of absence from his law career to help build up support and infrastructure for their ministry.

"I explored the gospel to see what Jesus commands of us and focused on some that I believe we often too readily set aside in our daily lives including trust, repentance, correct judgment and prayer," Zacaroli said. "In many cases, the Lord revealed direct experiences in my life through which he had spoken to me and I often didn't understand at the time. Jesus meant what he said, and he meant it to be a beautiful gift for all of his sheep. Truly believing, trusting and loving Jesus requires more than just a profession of love and belief."
