PEACHTREE CITY, Ga.

Joseph has been living on his own since he was 15, due to an abusive childhood. With the Vietnam War in full swing, his chances of being drafted are at an all-time high. He decides the only thing to do, is dodge the Army draft, by joining the Navy.

Author Albert Schriber makes his literary debut with his new novel, "Anchors Aweigh: Voyage to What I Chose to Become" (published by iUniverse), which draws from his own experiences in the Navy to tell the emotional story of a man named Joseph.

Joseph quickly learns that military life isn't as easy as he once thought, as it quickly brings him numerous unpleasant experiences. What he doesn't realize, is the lasting, positive effect these experiences will have on him.

Throughout "Anchors Aweigh," readers will watch Joseph mature into a responsible and hardened man. After a decade of Navy life and globe-trotting, Joseph will learn that abusive childhood experiences don't have to define him and that he is in control of his own destiny.

"Do not be defined by the abuse or sadness in your life," Schriber says. "Strive for autonomy and dignity on a continuum of growth."
