Wildflowers are those that are native to a place and not cultivated. Many are emigrants from other lands, the "weed flowers," and have become more successful than the natives. Author Alan M. Cvancara demonstrates his appreciation to these gifts of nature through his new publication, Wildflower Personalities. This book is a compilation of showy, large-sized photographs that attract attention and accompanied by the haiku and essays that convey his message.

This is a sampler of the immense world of wildflowers, with emphasis on close-up flower portraits to draw readers into fascinating, intimate floral details. Such intimacy leads to a basic understanding of what constitutes a flower and a deep appreciation of nature's beauty. This is not a handbook or field guide to wildflowers. Instead, the 27 wildflower photographs are chosen for their variety of floral architecture. They are followed by a selection of quotations about wildflowers, and also include tips on creating artistic wildflower portraits for budding photographers.

Cvancara provides an accompanying essay for each photograph that will enable readers to gain greater understanding of each wildflower portrait and thereby enhance its enjoyment and appreciation of the flower. He adeptly offers additional information regarding the blossoming season, interesting facts, and derivation of its common and scientific names. Readers may also find an illustrated glossary to a smattering of plant parts that will make their understanding of plant anatomy easier.

Vibrant and enlightening, Wildflower Personalities combines the allure of aesthetic beauty with the appreciation of basic facts about the subject matter. It draws the readers into the message it imparts regarding the essence of preserving nature.
