Kapolai, Hawaii

Author and engineer C. Don Manuel, P.E. invites readers to learn how to create a comfortable home capable of reducing the sweltering heat of the tropics. The informative pages of his new book contain "A Guide to Natural Ventilation Design" (published by Xlibris).

Having designed a successful Natural Ventilation (NV) and national award winning (US DoE) hi-rise building in lieu of an expensive and energy-intensive air-conditioning (A/C) system, Manuel has demonstrated a green design that he believes will help curtail present trend to Global Warming. He shares his experiences to help architects/students and designers understand the basics of NV and its applications, such as in residential homes where expensive wind tunnel testing is prohibitive, or in windy coastal areas suited for NV passive design. All the top resort destination hotels in Hawaii that have his HVAC design application utilize some of these passive design techniques, which successfully reduced A/C demand and energy consumption. These are prime examples of intertwined A/C and NV designs creating comfortable living spaces with reduced energy use.
