911 What Is Your Emergency? Discusses Dispatcher Calls

An estimated 240 million calls are made to 911 in the U.S. each year, according to nena.org. Author Luciaâ€s new memoir offers a rare and intimate glimpse into the world that 911 dispatchers hear and must face on a daily basis.

“9-1-1 What Is Your Emergencyâ€' contains 911 emergency and non-emergency calls compiled over Luciaâ€s 19-year career. All calls mentioned in the book are true and range from tragic to funny.

“Some people may not understand why or how we can make light of some situations,â€' Lucia said. “If the reader can approach this book with an open mind, it may give the reader insight to how we cope through our shift.â€'

Lucia faces many emotional tribulations during her career and this book offers an inside look into the one million calls she has taken. Most of the calls shared are funny and non-serious, but one chapter in the memoir is devoted to the tragic emergency calls.

“The majority of our calls are true emergencies and this can take its toll on the dispatcher if they are not able to leave the call at work at the end of the day,â€' Lucia said. “Some tragic calls will always stay with me.â€'

About the author:
Lucia worked at the San Diego Police Department Communications Division for more than 25 years. She was diagnosed with breast cancer, August 2013, had surgery and 30 radiation treatments, but now is cancer free. She currently resides in Murrieta, California, with her loving fiancé and two children.
