The Virtual Quilt Awards $5,000 to Fayette County Public Schools Art Departments

A total of $5,000 will be awarded to Fayette County public schools art departments by The Virtual Quilt, an online, digital project that showcases original artwork of students. This online exhibit was created by the Give Into The Groove Foundation, with the help of LexArts and Macy's Foundation. The prizes will be awarded through LexArts at the 2014 Give Into the Groove fundraising event at Whitaker Bank Ballpark, on Saturday, June 21, 2014.

$1,000 each will be awarded to Ashland Elementary and Bryan Station High School; $750 each to Liberty Elementary and Northern Elementary; and $500 each to Breckenridge Elementary and Cardinal Valley Elementary. An additional $500 will be awarded to Ashland Elementary for introducing the most artwork to the quilt, a total of 247 originals.

The Virtual Quilt is a free digital platform that allows users to upload images of their artwork for inclusion in an online exhibit and interactive community experience. Throughout the spring, FCPS students were encouraged to upload images of new or pre-existing original artwork to Any media of visual art was permitted, though artwork subject matter had to be appropriate for public viewing. Schools with the greatest participation will be awarded the cash prizes.

Each school's Virtual Quilt is available online and will also be exhibited at Give into the Groove at Whitaker Bank Ballpark, home of the Lexington Legends, on June 21st, 2014. Select pieces from the exhibit will also be on display at the downtown Lexington Public Library during the month of June. The Virtual Quilt project was made possible, in part, through the generous support of the Macy's Foundation, LexArts and Hot Sauce Records. Grants from the Macy's Foundation are focused in the areas of arts and culture, education, women's issues, the environment, HIV/AIDS and the environment. Proceeds from the sale of three "people's barrels" at LexArts' 2013 Bourbon Barrel Project on Town Branch Auction were designated to the Give Into The Groove Foundation to support the project. Hot Sauce Records is a record label owned by ellee ven, head of the Give Into The Groove Foundation and creator of The Virtual Quilt.
