Silver Prints – Photography Exhibit by Tim Volk Coming to Soka University in CA February 4 - May 10
"A camera should also be more than a neutral or mechanical transcriber of optical effects, it should be an integral part of the overall intention. The cameras which captured these images I either hand-made or extensively modified for my purposes. They range from the very large (11x14 inch film size) to medium format film (2¼ inch square) and from extremely sharp to very soft. The images reflect these different qualities and approach to the subject. For contemplative landscapes I prefer a large format camera on a tripod, which enforces slow, detail-emphasizing methods. For quirky observations on a journey, the light hand-held Holga with a plastic lens that renders a partly sharp image, softening toward The Edges.
"Less real by some measures, the silver print still conjures for me a distinctly different and weighty presence." Tim Volk
