Lehmann Maupin to Debut New Kader Attia Solo Exhibit this November
Lehmann Maupin has announced its representation of Kader Attia. The gallery will present his debut solo exhibition with Lehmann Maupin at both gallery locations in New York this November.
Having grown up between Algeria and the suburbs of Paris, where his family emigrated as a child, Attia has used his experience of living as a part of two cultures as a starting point to develop a dynamic practice that explores the wide-ranging influence and impact of Western colonialism on non-Western cultures.
Attia takes a poetic and symbolic approach to exploring complex ideas about the socio-political, economic, and aesthetic issues that arise from the intersection of different cultures. His practice, which often begins with intense anthropological and historical research and manifests itself in wide array of media including installation, sculpture and video, explores how these complex ideas impact and shape our everyday life experiences.
"Kader Attia's visionary work pushes us to reflect on the relationship between Western and non-Western cultures, as well as the repair of historical narratives", Rachel Lehmann notes. Attia's practice aligns closely with the broader context of Lehmann Maupin's program, which has long identified and championed artists whose work grows from personal experiences into an investigation of the wider world, such as Adriana Varejão, Tracey Emin, Gilbert & George, and Mickalene Thomas. We are thrilled to be working with Kader at such an important juncture in his career and look forward to broadening his exposure to audiences in the United States and Asia."
Attia's work is currently on view in his solo exhibition Continuum of Repair: The Light of Jacob's Ladder at Whitechapel Gallery, London until November 23rd, 2014 as well as the group exhibition The Crime Was Almost Perfect at Witte de With, Rotterdam until April 27th, 2014. His work is included in the 5th Marrakech Biennial and will be featured in Dak'Art 2014, 11éme Biennale de l'Art Africain Contemporain, opening May 9th, 2014. Other forthcoming projects in 2014 include a solo exhibition at the Beirut Art Center, Lebanon; a residency and group exhibition at Artpace, San Antonio, TX; and group exhibitions at MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt and the Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC), Mexico City.
Kader Attia was born in 1970 in France, and spent his childhood between Paris and Algiers. His debut solo exhibition was held in 1996 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and since then his artistic career has gained major international recognition with exhibitions such as the 50th Venice Biennale (2003), 8th Lyon Beinnial (2005), and solo exhibitions at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Newcastle, UK (2007), the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA (2007), Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Huarte, Spain (2008), Savannah College of Art, Savannah, GA (2008), and the Henry Art Gallery, University of Washington, Seattle, WA (2008).
Recent solo exhibitions include Reparatur 5. Acts at KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin (2013) and Construire, Déconstruire, Reconstruire: Le Corps Utopique at Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris (2012). Attia's work was featured in dOCUMENTA(13) Kassel, Germany (2012); other recent group exhibitions include Terms and Conditions, Singapore Art Museum, (2013), Performing Histories (1), The Museum of Modern Art, New York (2012); 10 ans du Projet pour l'Art Contemporain, Centre Pompidou, Paris (2012) and Contested Terrains, Tate Modern, London (2011)
