Galerie Lelong Brings Latin American Conceptual Art to Frieze New York, 5/4-7

Related: Galerie Lelong, Frieze New York

For the first presentation of Frieze New York, Galerie Lelong will showcase work by conceptual artists from Latin America, an area that has played a significant role in the gallery's exhibition program and is increasingly prominent in the contemporary art world. The booth will be open May 4-7. By showing both historical and contemporary Latin American works, the gallery hopes visitors will come away with an appreciation for the diversity of expression in the region, in addition to the singular achievements of the individual artists.

Featured artists include Pablo Accinelli, Sandra Gamarra, Alfredo Jaar, Cildo Meireles, Ana Mendieta and Hélio Oiticica.

Highlights include The Body is the Map (1991) by Alfredo Jaar, five light boxes depicting the map-like creases on the back of a Brazilian gold miner's neck; Cildo Meireles's installation exploring virtual space, Canto #1B (1967-2011); a gouache drawing by Hélio Oiticica entitled Metaesquema 286 (1958) representing the artist's geometric abstractions from the late 1950s; and a photograph of one of Ana Mendieta's emblematic female figures carved from the earth entitled Untitled (Labyrinth of Venus Series) (1982/1992).

Galerie Lelong will also feature a work by Spanish sculptor Jaume Plensa in the Sculpture Park at Frieze New York, located along the waterfront of the East River beside the fair. Plensa will present Yorkshire Soul III (2010), a 9 foot-tall seated figure composed of steel letters, resting atop a large boulder.

During Frieze New York, Galerie Lelong will open the exhibition Hélio Oiticica: Penetrables, presenting three of the artist's rarely-seen multi-sensorial installations of color at its gallery in Chelsea. The exhibition opens to the public on Saturday, May 5, with a reception from 6 to 8pm.

On Saturday, May 5, the galleries along 26th Street will host a free, all-access street party to welcome visitors to the inaugural New York edition of the Frieze Art Fair - the new, must-attend event on the international contemporary art calendar.

The gallery is located on West 26th Street between 10th and 11th Avenues in Chelsea.
