Andrea Huffman's FINDING CONNECTIONS Set for Lee Wagener Art Gallery at FLL, 10/3-1/6/2014
Broward artist Andrea Huffman's artwork will be on display at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) from October 3 through January 6, 2014. The exhibition, titled Finding Connections, will be installed at the Lee Wagener Art Gallery, Terminal 2, Departures level.
Inspired by the beauty and intrigue of the Florida environment, Andrea Huffman creates works of art on fabric, and invites viewers to connect to and experience its unique beauty through her work. "I am intrigued with the small nuances in nature," she says. "The interdependence within every aspect of the natural world and its relationship to humanity. I create works of art to communicate my personal experiences and observations of the natural world."
Fiber offers tactile and dimensional qualities in Huffman's art, while maintaining a two-dimensional surface. Her work draws upon both fine art and craft traditions, as well as contemporary innovations and integrates various media, such as drawing, painting, printmaking and digital imagery, with machine and hand-stitching. Each image is embellished in a way that Huffman hopes will emphasize and convey to the viewer her personal fascination with her subjects, bringing that beauty to their world.
As an art educator for 31 years in Broward County, Andrea Huffman has a master's degree in art education from Florida International University. In 2011, she retired from teaching in order to pursue her work as a full-time fiber artist.
She has exhibited throughout Florida in juried, group and invitational shows, including two solo shows in Broward County, receiving several awards for her work.
In 2011, she was one of two art educators selected in for the first Florida State Teachers Artist in Residence (STAR) program at the Hermitage Artist Retreat in Sarasota. In 2012, Huffman received a Broward County Creative Investment Grant and co-curated the exhibit Fresh Design: Fiber Art in the New Millennium at Florida Atlantic University. She continues to share her passion for art through new teaching opportunities, including Art in the Workplace classes offered through Business for the Arts of Broward; and she is currently a member of Studio Art Quilters Associates (SAQA).
