The character of Gary Coleman was rewritten because British audiences were not familiar with Coleman and his history. During previews he was referred to as just Gary, a former child star. But the reference was reinstated when it was found that British audiences would relate.
Many changes were planned, to make the subject matter more understandable for British audiences. But with the prevalence of American television and pop culture now, the changes were abandoned.
