The Civilians' Annual R&D reading series kicks off with five readings from today, May 21 to May 30. The series features new work by R&D members Jeanine Oleson, Sean E. Cunningham, Riti Sachdeva, Mary Kathryn Nagle, Juliana Francis Kelly and Tony Torn. Melissa Crespo, Mia Rovegno, and Michael Leibenluft will direct these presentations, all at various stages in their development process. These readings are free and open to the public, and take place in the Great Room at 138 South Oxford Street in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. To make a reservation, email rdgroup@thecivilians.org. The Civilians' R&D Group meets for nine months, during which time each artist or team of artists develops a new piece of theater through a creative investigation of a chosen topic. The creative process may include interviewing, community engagement, research, or other experimental methods of inquiry. The application for the 2014-15 R&D Group is now available online (http://thecivilians.org/programs/rdgroup.html), and is due by June 1st.
