"Literature cannot be the business of a woman's life." Or can it?

The Brontës, an original musical developed by Theater in Asylum and produced by Piper Theatre, premieres at Park Slope's Old Stone House & Washington Park this July. Originally conceived in 2014, based on extensive research, and workshopped for 3 years, the musical explores the struggles of the Brontës - Charlotte (Patricia Noonan), Emily (Yamuna Meleth), Anne (Anne Wechsler), and their brother Branwell (Christopher Nolan) - to live authentically as artists in 19th century England. Now regarded as a superstar of English literature, Charlotte Brontë went on to write her masterpiece Jane Eyre, spearhead her sisters' writing careers (Emily wrote Wuthering Heights.), and break through the Victorian glass ceiling. The internal dynamics of the Brontë family, the resentment between siblings, and the subsequent unraveling of family ties are revealed in this timely production. Theater in Asylum, whose stated goal is to see theater as "a continual forum for question, debate, beauty, and progress" has created a contemplative musical that is literary without being stuffy as it depicts the challenges of being a woman ahead of her time.
