American Classics is delighted to present acclaimed song duo Valerie Anastasio & Tim Harbold in their new show, In the Mood – A Time Capsule of Classics from 1939. Valerie & Tim showcase a remarkable year in film and song with songs from the classic MGM film The Wizard of Oz, along with beloved song hits of the year including In the Mood, All the Things You Are, Good Morning, And the Angels Sing, Sunrise Serenade, Beer Barrel Polka, and Lydia the Tattooed Lady.
Valerie & Tim have delighted audiences on many American Classics programs and now are featured in their first solo show. Previously they were heard in shows honoring Rodgers & Hart, Irving Berlin, and as featured performers in the hundredth birthday celebration of Alexander’s Ragtime Band in 2011. They joined Benjamin Sears & Bradford Conner for two shows, Fred & Ethel – Great Songs of Astaire and Merman and Marching Along With Time – Irving Berlin Songs, 1935-1945, both of which have also been recorded. With Sears & Conner they have a third CD, Noël & Cole – Together With Music (songs by Noël Coward and Cole Porter). Valerie has appears regularly in the Musicals in Concert series, most recently in Watch Your Step this past November, and she is on the recent live concert recording of songs by Sammy Cahn.
For twenty-five years, Valerie and Tim have invited audiences to their unique world of song, blending jazz standards, show tunes, and comic cabaret with their own distinctive musicianship and humor. Their shows encompass a trademark variety of styles, ranging from intimate renditions of Gershwin and Sondheim to torch songs to zany, crowd-pleasing performances of Cole Porter’s The Physician and Barry Manilow’s Copacabana. Even classical art songs can enter the mix to keep the audiences surprised and entertained. In 2013 Valerie and Tim released their first solo CD, Give ‘em the Oo-La-La. They have also recorded three CDs of music by Cole Porter, Noël Coward, Irving Berlin, and others, with Benjamin Sears & Bradford Conner Valerie & Tim have performed New England, including sold-out performances at Don’t Tell Mama (New York) and Scullers Jazz Club (Boston).
Valerie Anastasio also has a special interest in new music and is featured on Saving Daylight Time: New American Songs (Albany Records, Troy 343). Tim Harbold directs choral activities at Wheaton College and is also director of the Oure Pleasure Singers, an advanced chamber choir based in Attleboro, MA. American Classics is the Boston area’s only performing organization dedicated solely to American music. Since their first season in 1995 they have presented critically acclaimed concerts of vocal and instrumental music. Two American Classics specialties are the music of Irving Berlin and concert performances of rarely-given musicals, including first revivals of Berlin’s first two shows (Watch Your Step from 1914 and Stop! Look! Listen! from 1915) and the first reconstruction and revival of the classic Howard Dietz & Arthur Schwartz revue The Band Wagon (1931) in 2001. Little-known musicals by George & Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Richard Rodgers & Lorenz Hart have also been featured. The group has also commissioned new works from area composers. In 2012 American Classics saluted Fenway Park’s one hundredth season and later sang the National Anthem at for the season’s second game. Critics have called American Classics concerts “pure delight” (Boston Phoenix) and hailed them as “people you want to hear” (Boston Globe).
