Now Playing Onstage in Boston - Week of 1/26/2014 CANDIDE (NATIONAL THEATRE VERSION)
DUXBURY HIGH SCHOOL
1/31-2/1/2014
CANDIDE is based upon the 18th century Voltaire novel. Since its successful 1973 Broadway revival, CANDIDE has had many productions in both theaters and opera houses. The 1973 revival brought new audiences to this masterpiece in an intimate, quickly paced one-act version with an emphasis on comedy and characterization. Elements of the original 1953 version, along with songs that had been dropped, rewritten or re-conceived, have been added or altered in an effort to create a slightly re-imagined version of the classic CANDIDE. This version requires a large ensemble with a strong female lead. It is the perfect opportunity to showcase your trained singers of varying ages.

Now Playing Onstage in Boston - Week of 1/26/2014 WORKING
Lyric Stage COMPANY
1/3-2/2/2014
Based on Studs Terkel's best-selling book of interviews with American Workers, WORKING paints a vivid portrait of the men and women the world so often takes for granted: the schoolteacher, the phone operator, the waitress, the millworker, the mason, and the housewife, just to name a few. This new 2010 version of WORKING is a musical exploration of 26 people from all walks of life. While most of the professions have been updated, the strength of the show is in the core truths that transcend specific professions; the key is how people's relationships to their work ultimately reveal key aspects of their humanity, regardless of the trappings of the job itself. The show, still set in contemporary America, contains timeless truths. This new version of WORKING allows the audience to get a rare glimpse of the actors and technicians working to put on a show. This raw adaptation only enhances the realistic and relatable nature of the subject matter. With extremely modest set and orchestra requirements, universal subject matter, and featuring a multi-ethnic ensemble cast of variable size, WORKING is one of the most accessible, relevant and substantive musicals ever created. The new, revised 2010 version includes updated lyrics, a streamlined book and two new songs by IN THE HEIGHTS Tony Award-winning creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, as well as favorite by Stephen Schwartz, Craig Carnelia, and James Taylor.

EASTHAMPTON HIGH SCHOOL

XANADU follows the journey of a magical and beautiful Greek muse, Kira, who descends from the heavens of Mt. Now Playing Onstage in Boston - Week of 1/26/2014 G2K CINDERELLA
Performing Arts Center of MetroWest
1/31-2/2/2014
The 'G2K' Getting To Know Series: Uniquely adapted musicals specifically for youth performers. The timeless enchantment of a magical fairy tale is reborn with the Rodgers & Hammerstein hallmarks of originality, charm and elegance. Originally presented on television in 1957 starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers & Hammerstein's CINDERELLA was the most widely viewed program in the history of the medium. Its recreation in 1965 starring Lesley Ann Warren was no less successful in transporting a new generation to the miraculous kingdom of dreams-come-true, and so was a second remake in 1997, which starred Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother. As adapted for the stage, with great warmth and more than a touch of hilarity, the hearts of children and adults alike still soar when the slipper fits. In this specially created G2K version, all the beloved songs and familiar characters are present and accounted for. However, the entire script has been condensed to better suit young attention spans, and the plot has been slightly altered so as to highlight some important lessons that exist in this timeless tale. PLEASE NOTE: All schools wishing to peruse or perform a G2K musical should apply through theMusic by Rodgers, Richard; Book and Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II

Acton-Boxboro High School
1/31-2/8/2014
FootlooseOne of the most explosive movie musicals in recent memory bursts onto the live stage with exhilarating results. When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he isn't prepared for are the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, determined to exercise the control over the town's youth that he cannot command in his own home. When the reverend's rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren's reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid. The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him. To the rockin' rhythm of its Oscar and Tony-nominated top 40 score (the soundtrack album reached number one on the Billboard charts and has sold over 15 million copies!) and augmented with dynamic new songs for the stage musical, FOOTLOOSE celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people, guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind.

Book by Mark O'Donnell & Thomas Meehan. Music by Marc Shaiman. Lyrics by Scott Wittman & Marc Shaiman Based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters. Directed by Susan Kosoff. Musical Director: Matthew Stern. Scenic design by Janie Howland. Choreography by Laurel Conrad. Lighting by Scott Clyve. Costume design by Lisa Simpson. Jenna Lea Scott as Tracy Turnblad, Bob Saoud as Edna Turnblad, Peter Carey as Wilbur Turnblad. With Jennifer Beth Glick, Aimee Doherty, Mark Linehan, Gamalia Pharms, Cheryl McMahon, and Jane Staab. Hairspray is a musical that speaks to a whole generation of "upstarts" who marched for civil rights in the 1960's. Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big dreams, wins a dancing role on her favorite TV program, the popular Corny Collins Show. Some question her casting, yet she becomes a celebrity overnight! Frustrated with the producer's refusal to integrate the dance floor daily, Tracy draws on her own struggles with prejudice to lead the charge for change. "You Can't Stop The Beat" encapsulates an era that brought monumental changes through song, dance and the courage of a few. Hairspray is in part a social commentary but also an exuberant musical about a young girl who inspires a community to come together!
