The Little Music School (LMS) at the Franklin School for the Performing Arts (FSPA) will hold an Open House for prospective students and families on Sunday, October 25 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 38 Main Street in downtown Franklin.

The community is invited to learn more about the Little Music School, an innovative program that teaches children as young as 18 months to play the piano. The Open House will feature family-friendly fun with balloons, tattoos and a character meet-and-greet, as well as hands-on demonstrations geared to children of specific ages. Children ages 18-24 months are encouraged to visit at 11:00, 2 year-olds at 11:30, 3-4 year-olds at noon, and 4-5 year-olds at 12:30.

Created and introduced at the Franklin School for the Performing Arts in 2005, the Little Music School exposes children to music in a way they understand, through imagination, movement, play, and peer interaction. The program is built on Three Cs - Color, Creativity, and Core. The LMS curriculum uses color to make written music more accessible, creativity to help children interpret and express music in their own way, and core principles of music making and musical understanding to build a solid foundation for learning.

The strength of the Little Music School program may be measured in the commitment students make toward their involvement. Nearly 100% of students who enroll in the program graduate and continue on in their musical studies at FSPA. LMS Director Kim Rezendes attributes that success to a professional faculty of instructors with extensive backgrounds in music and early childhood education, as well as to the small class size (typically no more than seven students) that facilitates individualized instruction and attention to the needs of each child.

The Little Music School promotes fun in learning and encourages learning through doing, while building skills needed to read, play, understand, and appreciate music. LMS students succeed in a safe and nurturing environment without a parent in the classroom, developing a sense of independence and accomplishment at an early age. Children also gain confidence and self-esteem, while improving coordination, comprehension, memory retention, and communication skills.
