Elizabethtown College Continues Shakespeare's First Folio-Related Events

In conjunction with Elizabethtown College's First Folio! The Book That Gave Us Shakespeare exhibition taking place from Nov. 10 through Dec. 4, the College's High Library presents a variety of Shakespeare-related events through November and December. All events are free; some require registration.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, and 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, the College sponsors "A Family Fun Shakespear-ience" at Elizabethtown Public Library. This event, designed for children, ages 6-12, and their parents, includes a Shakespeare story time and active language activities. Registration is required - 717-367-7467.

At 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, Shakespeare and Chivalry with Dr. Lewis Walker takes place at the College's Bowers Writers House. Walker, a professor of English at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, conducts a lively lecture on Shakespeare and chivalry. At 8 p.m. the same evening, the College presents a musical performance "If Music Be The Food Of Love: Songs from the Plays and Sonnets of William Shakespeare." The recital is performed in Zug Recital Hall by student vocalists with piano accompaniment. The performance includes musical settings using songs that appear in Shakespeare's plays, as well as musical settings of Shakespeare's sonnets. Ticket required - 717-361-1212.

At 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, the College presents "To Be or Not to Be: Hamlet and the First Folio" in the Open Space of High Library's second floor. Dr. Lewis Walker delivers a lecture on Hamlet's publication in the First Folio.

New York City actor Louis Butelli presents "The Gravedigger's Tale" in Tempest Theatre at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13. The family-friendly performance tells the story of Hamlet from the perspective of the Gravedigger. The performance is approximately 45 minutes long and involves audience participation. Space is limited.

At 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, the College presents "Twelfth Night" as part of the Global Film Series, which, this year,features an international array of Shakespeare film adaptations. This film version of Shakespeare's beloved romantic comedy will be shown in Gibble Auditorium.

Another Global Film, "Throne of Blood," is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, in Gibble Auditorium. The classic 1957 Akira Kurosawa film adapts Shakespeare's Macbeth to a feudal Japan setting.

Several Pop-Up Shakespeare theatre performances will be performed the week of Nov. 18:

7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18 -- Folklore Coffee & Company, 1 N. Market St.

10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19 -- Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St.

7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19 -- Black Gryphon Restaurant, 54 Mount Gretna Road

2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20 - Elizabethtown College's Tempest Theatre.

The Pop-Up Shakespeare Players, a troupe of E-town students, perform scenes and monologues from a selection of Shakespeare's plays. Space is limited.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, Speak the Speech: An E-town Faculty Shakespeare Reading
takes place on the second floor of the College's High Library. Faculty members Mark Harman, Theresa Mastrobuono, Michael Swanson, Vanessa Borilot and Jesse Waters perform dramatic readings from their favorite Shakespeare plays.

Winding down the Global Films for the year is "Coriolanus" shown at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4. Shown in Gibble Auditorium, the 2011 film adaptation of Shakespeare's historical tragedy, features headliner Ralph Fiennes and performances from Gerard Butler, Jessica Chastain and Vanessa Redgrave.
