ACTS of Concord Present ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, 5/30-6/1The Alexander Children's Theatre School (ACTS) of Concord, MA is pleased to announce their Spring, 2014 production of Once On This Island. The Tony Award-nominated musical will play four performances, May 30 through June 1 at the Umbrella Community Arts Center (40 Stow Street, Concord, MA).

Written by Tony Award winners Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (Seussical, Ragtime, Rocky: The Musical), Once On This Island is directed by acclaimed Boston actor and director Paul Farwell with music direction by Matthew Stern and choreography by Tricia Whitlock. The production team also includes Joanne Farwell (scenic design), Saul Slezas (lighting designer), and Jan Kmiec (sound designer). The show is produced by Stephanie C. Mavrides in association with James Forbes Sheehan.

The cast of 26 includes high school students from Concord, Natick, Wellesley, Acton, Sudbury, and other communities.

In Once On This Island, Ti Moune, a peasant girl, rescues a wealthy boy from the other side of the island, Daniel, with whom she falls in love. Unbeknownst to Ti Moune, the pompous gods who preside over the island make a bet with one another over which is stronger, love or death, the stakes being Ti Moune's life. When she pursues Daniel, who has returned to his people, Ti Moune is shunned because of her lowly status. Her determination and capacity to love, though, is not enough to win Daniel's heart and Ti Moune pays the ultimate price; but the gods turn Ti Moune into a tree that grows so strong and so tall, it breaks the wall that separates the societies and ultimately unites them.

PERFORMANCES are Friday, May 30 at 7:30 pm, Saturday, May 31 at 2:00 and 7:30 pm, and Sunday, June 1 at 6:00 pm at the Umbrella Community Arts Center (40 Stow Street, Concord, MA). Tickets range from $15 to $20 and may be purchased online (www.ACTS1.org) or by calling 781-899-4467.
