...Kabuki "Into the Woods"?!?! wtf?!
"

I know it's an old post, but I saw this production at Providence College a friend was playing Jack.  The whole production wasn't Kabuki.  They did each fairytale in the style of a different culture.  I believe the Giant was done with an African motif and Cinderalla was in the style of a Arabian nights/Middle Eastern.  Jack's story was done in Vietnam style.  There were other styles but I don't recall them.

Cats is so... well Cats that I can simultaneously think the costumes/set look terrible and also think that they look pretty great for an amateur production. God, Cats is confusing. 7,485 performances on Broadway. Unbelievable.

As sad as we all are that Blacklick’s production videos are gone, there is one saving grace. I’ve found the current worse production of Les Mis that is viewable on youtube. Let me introduce you to,

AVHS Les Miserables

There is so much wrong with this production, I can’t even list it all. I would like to say before hand that a lot of these kids are probably do not have English as their native tongue. The high school that did this is in San Bernardino and is a heavily spanish speaking school.

THAT BEING SAID, this production was horrendous. So many songs are spoken through (the first that comes to mind is ‘Attack On Rue Plummet’ which, to be fair, is hard for most adults), the Marius might be worse than Blacklick- at least their Marius could carry a tune. They decide to move ‘On My Own’ from the Act 2 opener to before ‘One Day More’. Speaking of ‘One Day More’, they don’t even move the harmonies at the end, they just stay on the same note.

The true highlights of this production are ‘One Day More’ (1:03:14) and Empty Chairs At Empty Tables (1:31:56) but please, truly immerse yourself in this show. The costumes, the choreography, the use of the adult characters as their child counterparts

Amazing

Honestly, this entire thread bums me out. In most of these productions, the students probably participated enthusiastically and were proud of their work, even if the show...wasn't great. I have sat through my share of stinkers at the local/high school level but I do it to support amateur theater and the kids who spent days and weeks preparing with the limited resources available. The existence of this thread seems pretty mean spirited. I'm surprised the mods here, who regularly delete threads that criticize or gossip about adult professional performers would allow a thread mocking kids theater productions to stand, but what do i know?

Just watched one day more. What’s up with all these high school Mariuses? This one has the better voice (which isn’t saying much), but at least Blacklick’s was clearly putting in more effort and getting the notes right. This version of One Day More is honestly just as bad as Blacklick’s. I feel bad for laughing, but I really just can’t help it.

People who make fun of high schoolers doing their best to put on a show really need to find another hobby.

A white boy should never be singing this.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

I do feel bad laughing at horrible productions, but I often can’t help myself.

To me, that’s where the beauty of Noises Off and The Show That Goes Wrong come from. All of the laughs, none of the guilt.

For a high schooler, he sang that pretty darn good. And he was into it. Good for all of them. I suspect getting high school boys to play girls may not have been easy but they did it but it is a scene night so they may have all decided to do it.

I don't think that it's fair game to make fun of a specific kid but it is fair game to make fun of the production because it's likely adults who made bad choices. If you have a tiny school without a lot of boys, pick a show that's appropriate, don't pick Les Mis. Too many high school programs are run by people who don't know what they're doing. There's enough exceptional high school theater programs at schools of all shapes and sizes that terrible ones should have better people running them and are, in my opinion, fair game for criticism and mockery.

I'm going to guess the boys picked that themselves- no way did a teacher assign that.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

The problem is that that’s not what people are doing on this thread. They’re largely singling out the performers. And I agree with others who have said that it’s troubling.

Technology is a great thing. But when social media is used, by adults, to make fun of people, especially kids, it’s kind of sad.

Wow...just spent a couple of hours going through this thread. It would've taken much longer but so many of the videos have been removed.

Here's something I stumbled on a few months ago. A high school production of TITANIC that is actually very good. The link I'm posting is the finale, but the entire show is available.
