Any other "Sailor Moon" fans?
Posted: 8/3/08 at 06:11pm
Ok, call me a nerd or whatever, but I recently rediscovered the first season, and I can't believe how dark/mature it is for a TV show that is kinda aimed towards kids.

I can't get through the subtitled episodes (no time to sit and watch, I have to have it on in the background), but I am enjoying the dub.

I remember that show. My younger sister watched it practically everyday after school. Yeah, I agree that some of it seems odd for children to enjoy, but it is Anime, so I know the culture is different. Now, if you aren't familiar with the later episodes with different characters, that is some weird stuff.

I was addicted when I was kid. LOVED this show and LOVED how dark it was! It was like an animated soap opera meets Power Rangers.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I'm a fan right here. LOVE this show. I catch as much as I can of it on youtube. I prefer the dub, because the original anime voices, high-pitched and spastic, though they are more darker than the already dark dub episodes, however. Even though a lot of the dubbed shows were edited, but I enjoy them.

I need to get the dubbed series on DVD, I missed a lot when I was a kid because they always came on tv at the most inopportune times in the morning.

I wanted to bump this thread because I heard some good news today. 'Sailor Moon' is going to be rebooted in Summer 2013. The staff intends to release the new anime worldwide simultaneously. I am so excited for this. This was one of my favorite TV shows as a kid and taught many good messages and morals.

Sailor Moon was my gateway drug into the wonderful world of shoujo manga/anime. I hope the new series is great and not just the fan service of the live sentai style TV show they did a few years back. It would be cool if they were more faithful to aspects of the original manga as well.

It always seemed as if it was realy aimed at Japanese men with pubescent schoolgirl obsessions.

Terri Hawkes, who voiced Serena/Sailor Moon for most of the first season as well as the entire second season, still can voice her easily. The voice she used was actually her natural speaking voice. Here are some videos of her at this year's Florida Anime Experience.

Ugh, hated the dubbed voice cast (though I hated more the replacement of all of the camptastic original background music in the dub with lame casio keyboard stuff).

I'm sure other fans have seen the kinda ridiculous fan movie some New York kids made last fall (which they did, to be fair, put a lot of effort into--though the main reaction seems to be that Tuxedo Mask has a nice body when in his underwear, and the wigs look awful). But in case not: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nrp6O9npR_c

"It always seemed as if it was realy aimed at Japanese men with pubescent schoolgirl obsessions. "

Meh, by the same philosophy Batman and Robin was really aimed at gay pedophiles... Wait. The main thing Sailor Moon pointed out in the early 90s, before shoujo (girl's) anime or manga had made an impression here, was how strange to have a story filled with death, homosexuality and soap opera twists aimed squarely at 5-8 year old girls (the target age of the magazine the original manga was published in) in Japan yet it had to be extremely edited to meet the requiremenets of a slightly older demo in North America.

All I know is, there's a LOT of Sailor Moon porn on the net - both live and animated.

ah but that's pretty common--I mean there's live action and animated Scooby Doo porn too. I just think it's a bit of a stereotype (that yes, has some truth) that there're these Japanese, repressed businessmen who secretly jerk off to their Sailor Moon DVDs or something. There's school girl fetish porn everywhere--not just Japan. A Japanese (female) friend of mine said that the main fandom for the show in Japan is largely like here--girls, women who grew up with it, and gay men.

I wonder if the new anime will include the Outer Sailor Scouts/Senshi. If they do I wonder they will do about Sailor Pluto. Pluto is no longer considered a planet, but then again the Moon is not a planet and there was also Sailor Mini Moon.

My dearly departed Luna was named for this show. My brother was a huge Sailor Moon fan when we got her.

I was a huge fan of Sailor Moon, so I would love to see it come back in some form for the English speaking audience. Terri's voice is the one I remember so distinctly from the series, and I just loved how it fit so well with the character, and I'd love to hear her do it again.

Here's a video that highlights the three different women who voiced Sailor Moon for the English dub - they all sound similar, but there's differences. I really love Terri's voice the most out of the three, but the other two women do a lot with the role as well.

Most people did not like way that Linda Ballantyne, who took over the role in the final two seasons due to Terri being pregnant, voiced the character. However, as Terri mentioned in one of the videos Linda was given a difficult task, but she put herself out there quite well.

I had no idea he was one of the voices behind Tuxedo Mask - he'll always be Jett Jackson's agent from The Famous Jett Jackson or the record producer guy from the Cheetah Girls to me. Crazy.

Apparently, Vince also did a stint on the national tour of Mamma Mia.

A Sailor Moon festival will be held in NYC at Lincoln Square Neighborhood Center on June 30. Coincidentally, that is the same day as Serena/Usagi's (her Japanese name) birthday.

Perfect way of putting it. I loved it!
