Awkward Stage Door Moments

This is technically a stage door moment since it happened at the stage door, but it wasn't after a show and it was completely by accident. My friend and I found out about Norbert Leo Butz touring with the first 6 cities of DRS and so we bought tickets in Costa Mesa, booked a hotel and made a weekend of it. We're from Northern Cali, so we made the 7 hour trip down, checked into our hotel, got ready for the show and started to walk over. At the time, they were doing a lot of street construction and we were a bit confused about how to get around the building to the front of the theatre and went the wrong way. We ended up walking up the ramp to the stage door (which was super nice, glass doors, looked like an office building). As we were walking up, I saw this guy coming from the opposite direction with a hat on and I was just kinda watching him cause my friend couldn't figure out how to make her camera work and kept stopping to figure it out. When the guy got to the top of the stairs opposite me, he looked up and it was Norbert. I was completely dumbstruck and just stared open-mouthed and frozen. He kinda smiled at me as he walked past and in the doors, but I couldn't move. I felt so ridiculous. I know he knew that I knew who he was, because I couldn't have looked like a more starstruck idiot. When I finally got my body to work again, I realized my friend had pretty much missed the whole thing. She only saw him once he was in the glass doors.

The sad part is that he was so mobbed by people after the show, we stood back a bit cause we didn't want to seem like crazies and he broke away from the crowd and left fairly quickly. We ended up behind him, since he was staying at the place next door to our hotel, but we didn't say anything cause we didn't want to seem like stalkers. So, when he crossed the street we made sure t get all the way across from our hotel before crossing as well. haha.

It was a funny experience and a fun trip.

At the Jersey Boys run in SF (with the Vegas cast), Rick Faugno and Joyce Chittick came out together after the show. I started chatting with Rick, and my very starstruck friend talked to Joyce. Of course he was all flustered and uncomfortable speaking to her alone, and he meant to tell her that he liked the way she delivered some of Mary Delgado's lines, but ended up saying, "I really like your 'a$$hole'". (He meant, "I really like the way you say..." in regards to the scene where Mary Delgado tells Nick Massi to watch his mouth in her kitchen) It made her crack up (thankfully!), and Rick left saying, "I like it too!"

The next time he saw both of us, Rick pointed to my friend and said, "You..." and we all started laughing. At least they won't forget us now (me by association).

During my first Wicked stage door, I kissed Idina Menzel on the cheek when she hugged me....I have no clue why...she was a little shocked but smiled it off..

At Xanadu, I had brought the copy of the Advocate Cheyenne was in, and had him sign that (which he personalized and i was a very happy girl) and then the playbill after. He was so sweet like everyone has said, and somehow he hung on to my playbill and I was too high (not really) from meeting him. Kerry came out and I went to give her the Advocate accidently, and she was just like "Oh!". Cheyenne then called from the other side "I have someone's playbill" from which i screamed (literally) "THATS MINE!" he brought it over and apologized, and I felt like such a jerk for yelling like that. Awkward.

OK! well, first, there was when i went to see Wicked On Broadway, I was taking a picture with Derrick Williams (Fiyero) and right before the picture was taken, i fell backwards into derrick william's arms so, in the picture, I look like a frightend cat. Then, there was the time I saw Wicked in Chicago where I handed my playbill to Erin Mackey (Glinda) to be signed, then she signed it, and gave it to some other person who was at the stage door, so i had to go searching for it lol. Also, another was, after Gypsy on Broadway, when the actor who played Rose's Father came out, I recognized him from Seinfield, the "high talker" so when he comes over i say "Noreen? This is DAN!" in a high pitched voice and then he just made a face at me lol

Lizzie, I agree! I was SO grateful they had a great sense of humor about it, because otherwise I would have been mortified. Apparently it kept Joyce laughing all of the next day.

At the [title of show] stagedor, when Jeff came around I went "It was an amazing show Hunter!" *OMFG DIES FROM EMBARRASSMENT* He gave me a weird look and my eyes went wide and I quickly "OMG! JEFFJEFFJEFF!!! Why am I always doing that?!?!" He gave me another weird look, signed my Playbill and CD insert, took a picture and walked away. XP

Thank goodness I don't have anything totally embarrassing. Well, I went to see Spamalot again tonight, just because I like the show. Well, except for parents, I think I was probably one of the older ones at the stage door tonight. There were mostly kids. I felt a little dumb about it, also I think I was a tiny bit taller than Drew because I was wearing heels. LOL! But then, he's only 5' 6" or something like that, so it just happens. Usually I would be shorter than him.

Actually, I was getting a little nervous about the barricade situation. I guess because it was not a huge crowd tonight or maybe ever now, since Clay Aiken is gone, they did not fully barricade the stage door area. So I was sort of next to the barricade, nothing in front of me, and I felt like I had to almost step behind it to get the attention for people to sign my playbill. I'm sure if it was an issue though, I would have been told. Plus, I was very quiet and patient, and said thank you. I also did not take any photos.

However, this mother with her daughter next to me were ridiculous. No, they were not rude at all, but I just thought they were sort of odd. Like the only 2 cast members they got autographs from were Drew Lachey and Stephen Collins. They did not have playbills either, so I'm guessing they might have just been stage dooring again, just to do it. I was thinking that because each of them had a 8x10" photo of themself with one of them and they got them to sign them for them. Oh yeah, and they took a million more photos, practically having me shoved out of the way each time. Oh yeah, and they used the barricade as a storage unit for stuff they brought. So they had their clip board with the photos on them on it somehow, with something else, and this stuff kept falling on Stephen Collins' feet as he was taking photos with other fans. If it were me, I would be embarrassed about that.

So the other night and Xanadu Whoopi came out and was very nice. She didn't talk much. So she was a few people down from me and this one women was so excited she was like jumping up and down and saying "Oh I love you" and Whoopi said "Thank You" and she kept jumping and stuff and she was trying to sign the Playbill but the women wouldn't let go of the Playbill and Whoopi was like "Let Go!" And then as she moved on on the line the women continued to jump and scream. And as Whoopi was signing another Playbill the women grabbed her wrist and said to her "I love you I really do!" and Whoopi just wanted to move on.

Then Tony Roberts came out and the girl next to me asked for a picture and he said "Sure" and then kept moving on without taking the picture and he was in front of me and took my Playbill and was ready to sign. But I didn't have a pen I was sort of using the girl's pen next to me. Well then the girl asked again if she could have a picture and he said "Sure" and then shoved my Playbill back to me and walked away. He did not want to be there.

I went to see Little Mermaid this summer with a friend, and it was the first time I'd ever been to New York. I'd seen loads of touring shows and countless videos on youtube and own hundreds of cast recordings of shows, but it was my first real show. So I was practically hyperventilating when I got to actually meet some of the stars... oh, who am I kidding, I'll come right out and say it-- Norm Lewis. I absolutely adore that guy's voice... and yes, I think he's pretty darn attractive.

Well, after I got his autograph and told him he was my favourite Javert as well(which is a lie... he's my second-favourite after Terrence Mann, but he didn't need to know that), I was giddy and reeling with excitement. Then I saw Derrick Baskins who played Jetsam, and may I interject here that he and Tyler Maynard as Flotsam were incredible.

Well, I was so excitable in the Post-Norm-Autographness of it all that as soon as I saw Darrick Baskins, I squealed, "Dude, you've got charisma like whoa!" Those were my exact words. No idea where they came from. He looked at me funny, then said, "Ha-hey! Look at you!" I still to this day have no idea what that means.

Anyway, I'd left my purse in the theatre... again, I'm blaming this on the excitement of getting to meet Norm Lewis... and so the next day, I had to go back to get it. (Surprisingly, it was still there). As I was leaving the theatre, a matinee had just ended and all of the stars were at stagedoor again. Well, I ran into Derrick Baskins, and he started waving, then he pointed at me and yelled, "She got my autograph yesterday!" I think I blushed the colour of Sebastian the crab.

eek...awkward tony roberts story. I guess we're allowed to be in horrible moods every now and then...lol. it just so happens that HIS horrible mood was to his fans. lol.

I just got a recent story

I saw Spring Awakening on August 28th and well my friend had told me that Emma Hunton's birthday was 2 or 3 days ago so at the Stage door it got kind of awkward... after I complimented her, after she signed my playbill and took a picture with her

Me:*after picture as she is waking away* oh yeah and happy belated birthdayy
Emma: Surprised *in complete shock* Oh thank you... you know I don't think anyone even said happy birthday at the stage door on my birhtday
Me: oh your welcome and sorry *kinda shying away*
Emma: *signing other persons playbill* oh its ok thank you... its cool its kind of creepy but its still cool
Me: oh ok.

It was real awkward like I can't explain it... I don't think I will ever forget that

Tony Roberts' bad moods are always directed toward his fans it seems! I was standing in line for the show- I had stage seats- and got to see all of the cast members arrive for work. Well, Tony walks by and I said Hello Tony - just in a low key friendly way I didn't scream or jump or tell him that I loved him ( why would I)- and he just looked at me and gave me a dirty look and kept walking in to the theatre. Now I didn't expect him to stop and hold a conversation with me, but would it kill him to say hello to someone who said it to him, let alone paid money to support his show? My friend also asked to take a picture with him at the stage door after the show and he turned around and walked away from her. RUDE!!

When I was at a crowded stagedoor with a friend who wore a rather very large articles of clothing to fit his body, this young girl behind us said, "I can't see anybody! There's a huge man in front of me."

I didn't know what to say.

I guess an awkward/annoying mix.
At In the Heights last wed evening, when Lin came out, I had already awkwardly ran into him earlier that day, so I kind of wanted to avoid discussing that. I asked him if he shot Mindy, and the girl next to me was like "WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!", while Lin was laughing and said, obviously that he'd find out when we did.
A few minutes later, when Robin came out, he said he'd seen me before, and I went on to tell him how I loved watching him, blah blah blah, and that he was my favorite part about the movie Camp. The same wonderful girl from before was like "WHAT CAMP MOVIE?" Robin calmly expalined that he was in a movie called Camp, and she still kept screaming about "MOVIE CAMP?!"
I wanted to slap this girl, really, she was so annoying.

BECAUSE i saw camp first. It was really awkward for me seeing him in In The Heights for some reason...I guess it was the going from VERY campy gay boy, who dressed in drag....to kind of a rough dude. It was odd. lol.

At the Phantom tour, I bought a poster and really wanted to get it signed by Richard Todd Adams because he was absolutely phenomenal. However, I hadn't planned on buying anything so I didn't come prepared with a metallic Sharpie. I just used a black ball point pen, and the actors had to sign on the very small amount of white that was on the poster, which was, of course, the mask.

Anyways, I was waiting and I got Kim Stengel and John Whitney's autographs, and I was getting scared because I didn't think there would be enough room for Richard Todd Adams to sign. So when Bruce Winart came up to me and saw that I was holding a pen, he held out his hands for my poster and pen, but I didn't give it to him, and I just said, "Thanks." I felt really bad afterward. But, in the end, I got my autograph!
