The plot of the new ALW Phantom musical sounds like Phantom Goes To Coney Island. It was in one the NY dailies today

Yeah, it does sound silly, but whadayagonnado?

I can only hope Jack O'Brien can make something good out of this.

Somehow this doesn't sound as "confirmed" as Playbill would like to think. Whatever happened to David Zippel?

Ugh, I was hoping if we all turned a blind eye this would go away.

Dear God, why do I think this will be a flop of epic proportions ??? If it is a hit, I dread for Broadway's future ! It will be struck by sequel-itis, just like Hollywood ! What's next, Elphaba Strikes Back, The Son of Lion King or Mamma Duo ???

Don't forget Sunday in the Park with Dot! The first explores Dot's life when she moves to America. The second act is set 20 years later, with Marie struggling to achieve her dream of being a flapper girl!

The whole thing sounds so absurd, it's almost impossible to take it seriously. The Phantom escaping to NY and setting up an amusement park in Coney Island? Christine and Roul have a son who happens to be a musical prodigy?? Bet you can't figure out who the father of the son REALLY is!

But I do have faith in Jack O' Brian. Hopefully if we're lucky. he'll be able to take this thing and turn straw into gold.

And as far as bad sequels go, I just just imagine Hairspray II: The Von Tussell's Revenge, Sweeney Todd : The Wrath of Tobias, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels II: Jail! (Freddie, Christine and Lawrence are finally busted and thrown in jail, where they attempt to con their way into escaping)

I find the original hard to take seriously, so imagine how I feel about this one.

Why would anyone put money into this show?! Maybe they have the Producers scheme going for them! LOL!

I just pray the music is good. Lord knows ALW could use some artistic brownie points.

The original Phantom is so perfect (yes I know it's BWW blasphemy to think that) that I think any type of sequel will just hurt the original. And of course I have the recurring nightmare that ALW will issue a press release that says something like "we thought with the new Phantom coming, now is the time for the original Phantom to leave NY"......but considering that Phantom is SOLD OUT this entire week I guess thats a longshot.

Well, this in talks for years now, I wonder whether it's more than just a trunk show from the very beginning.

Otherwise it sounds campy.

I also want Ragtime II: The next Generation

I highly doubt this show will ever see Broadway. Neither "The Beautiful Game" or "Whistle Down the Wind" made the transfer because they were so bad. "Woman in White" managed just over 100 performances. "Jeeves" flopped in 1996. The last successful new show he had on Broadway was in 1993.

If Phantom II is at the artistic level of those shows, it won't transfer either. Andrew may want it in NYC, but RUG has shown restraint transferring confirmed flops.

Is this aimed for the 2008/2009 season?

The plot sounds way too silly.

The novel that it's based on was ridiculous but you could see the potential where if they changed some things it'd be good. But the plot for the musical, believe it or not, sounds even more silly than the novel was!

RENT 2 - Mimi dies of aids a week after she is found. Roger writes her a new song in that week then she tells him to **** off. He kills himself. Maureen and Joanne run off to Florida. Benny dumps Allison and runs off with Collins. Mark is left alone.

This could work. Who cares if Jonathan Larson is dead.
