Just wanted to make sure you all know about this show, I think it's not to be missed...
NATALIE JOY JOHNSON AT VLADA
MUSICAL DIRECTION BY BRIAN NASH DIRECTED BY BEN RIMALOWER
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 23rd, 2007 at 11:00 PM no cover/no minimum
Natalie Joy Johnson, audience favorite in Legally Blonde and Bare: A Pop Opera, debuts an exciting new club act at Vlada after sold out engagements of previous shows at Joe’s Pub, the Cutting Room, Feinstein’s and Ars Nova. Natalie will be in fine form, uninhibited and balls-to-the-wall, as she brings her trademark belt, irreverence and heart to a contemporary take on the kind of wild shows Bette Midler used to perform at the Continental Baths.
I'm SO there. Natalie is a wonder to see live, particularly in these settings.
There are some people in the world who say that writing stories, or composing music or dancing sparkly dances is easy for them. Nothing interferes with their ability to create. While I celebrate their creative freedom, a little part of me just wants to punch those motherf*ckers in the teeth...[tos]
Truly fun *awesome* show @ Vlada tonight- I can't decide if my favorite was Natalie's "Out Tonight" (yes- as in "Out Tonight" from RENT, but picture a dramatic reading set to music, moreso than an actually sung song- it was hilarious) to start off the evening, or her cover of Whitney's "It's Not Right, But It's Ok" towards the end (especially that note on 'me'- wow), but the whole set was just so much fun, such a great show!
ps- Blonde is usually dark on Tuesdays, but they had their Actors Fund performance tonight.
It was a great set, though the huge amount of background noise and talking was excessive, especially in the quieter numbers. And I was happy to hear her sing that fabulous Our Lady J song again.
Completely didn't know that was the name of it, never heard it before last night- I just referred to it as "the song about shooting the boy who broke your heart, and his new slut girlfriend." :)
It wasn't really the same arrangement as Our Lady J's - it felt more lounge-y. It was pretty hilarious the way she belted the "ouOOOUUUT tonight" kind of like Ethel Merman.
I also really really loved the "It's Not Right, But It's Okay"
"Pink Prada Purse" is maybe my favorite song of all time. When I saw Midsummer for the last time in September, Jonnah was there but I didn't notice until someone called out his name...which is my name, spelled differently...and we both turned. It was strange. Same thing happened once at the After Party. So bizarre.
Anywho...I love them both. Hope I catch the next show!
