"maybe not a plot summary, but has anyone read the book WICKED? how could ANYONE read that book and think, upbeat (compared to the book) flashy, highly succesfull bway musical"

You are so right. I read the book after I saw the show, and had the same thought. The two have completely different feels, at least to me.

A developmentally challenged woman falls in love with a guy who catches her hat.

A girl has to stay at a castle with singing objects and a monster who needs anger management.

An infertile couple need a cow, slipper, cape, and hair if they want to have a child.

Let’s make a musical about a Christian boy band.

"Y'know the Who's Tommy? Let's turn it into a Broadway show!"

I'm the queen of open-mindedness, and I love listening to my 'Tommy' OBCR, but I'm still flabbergasted they decided to do it in the first place. XD

That's odd you say that about Grey Gardens, taz and jordan--I think it's a natural for a musical. The two Edies sing throughout the doc, Big Edie was an aspiring singer, Little Edie sings and dances throughout as well...plus you have the built-in legion of gay fans...I didn't think it that much a stretch.

And I've posted this quote before, but I love it, so there!

Smithers: I've written a musical about Malibu Stacy.
Burns: A musical about a doll? Why not write one about the common cat or the King of Siam?! Give it up Smithers!

"A musical about an old guy listening to a musical."

OLD?? Seriously, you think he is old?????

"Any way you spin Mamma Mia! will always sound absurd."

In this day and age, it sounds quite realistic, actually.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Titanic yet. I'll never forget how the show was basically condemned on its concept long before it ever opened only to surprise critics and audiences once they actually saw it. Though I know not everyone is a fan, I loved the show (though the set design seemed unfinished) and it has one of the most gorgeous scores I've ever heard in musical theatre.

Someone did mention it. "The greatest maritime disaster in history," wasn't that Titanic? Or was there ANOTHER musical about an even greater maritime disaster? But I agree with you, I love Titanic even though it sounds like a bizarre idea for a musical.

That's a really good point Lil. The doc always had this cultish following around it and I think that's why I found it to be an odd choice. The fact that they made it so mainstream and universal is, again, a credit to their talents.

....but the world goes 'round

URINETOWN! that shows how important a title can be...
"I mean, sitting side by side with another man watching Patti LuPone play Rose in GYPSY on Broadway is essentially the equivalent of having hardcore sex." -Wanna Be A Foster. "Say 'Goody.' Say 'Bubbi.'" ... "That's it. Exactly as if it were 'Goody.' Now I know you're gonna sing 'Goody' this time, but nevertheless..."
