Funny Songs About Death
Posted: 12/13/04 at 02:08pm
Hello Everyone,

Yes...this is a tad morbid, but I work for a Hospice and I am trying together a funny little CD with songs about death for my staff. Any ideas??

Thanks,
Way

"Bigass Rock"! The Full Monty.

Well, it's a funny song about killing yourself, at least.

'Being Alive'

I'm sure there are some in ASSASSINS.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

"Now" from Little Shop of Horrors, although that's more about killing the guy and the guy dies from laughing gas overdose and suffication, but it is really funny.
And hang on, when did you win the discus?

I Can Live With That-- old people falling in love, and talking about their death a little.

Copacabana... "There was blood and a single gunshot, but just who shot who?" lol.
And if she'll say, "My darling, I'm yours!" I'll throw away my striped tie and my best pressed tweed, all I really need is the girl...

'Death Is Such An Odd Thing' from Dance Of The Vampires. No cast recording though - unless you want it in German!

How about "Thank you Very Much!" from Scrooge?
"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

Maybe something from Urinetown:
"Snuff That Girl"
"Don't Be the Bunny"
"What is Urinetown?"
"Act 1 Finale"
"Why Did I Listen to That Man?"

I LOVE "Don't Be the Bunny". The tollbooth part cracks me up every time.

"All Fall Down" from Romance in Hard Times could work as a funny death song.

Oh, Sweeney Todd's "A Little Priest" is the BESTEST and most FUNNIEST song about death ever!
"What the hell happened to you? You look like a Make-A-Wish Kid. You know, I just knew you were gonna bring shame on this new family of ours, and it just figures you had to go make yourself over into some heroin-shootin skate board chic on the only day E! could interview you!" - Cherry Cherry, on her daughter Mary Cherry

Well, it's not so much from a musical, but would "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life?" from Monty Python and the Life of Brian work?

All of Elegies has very funny songs involving death. Buy the cd.

"elegies a song cycle" by William Finn

"Yesterday is done. See the pretty countryside. Merrily we roll along, roll along- catching at dreams."- Merrily we roll along "The living was the prize, the ending's not the story."- Elegies, a song cycle

Always Look on the Bright Side of Life- Monty Python

It's not Broadway, but it's a great song. Monty Python is amazing.
"Yes, I have tricks in my pocket, I have things up my sleeve. But I am the opposite of the stage magician. He gives you illusion that has the appearance of truth. I give you the truth in the pleasant disguise of illusion." - the glass menagerie
