The Scarlet Pimpernel--which recording?

How would you rate these recordings? Should I put one on my Christmas list? Which one do you prefer?

Not Encore..the other one is better. Encore is weird!

I actually like the Encore CD because it has songs by Rex Smith and Rachel York on it. The pop cuts at the end of the CD are weird, I agree, but it's worth it to me to hear Rachel York sing "Storybook" and "I'll Forget You," which isn't on the OBCR. I like Rachel's voice so much more than Christine Andreas'. I wish they had made a complete cast recording of SP2. Then there would truly be a clear choice - or a strong reason for getting both cast recordings to hear full versions of each show. Either way, the score is enjoyable, and Douglas Sills is terrific.

It's not though. The Encore CD is largely tracks from the OBCR. I think just three of the tracks were re-recorded. Plus, good songs have been cut from the OBCR! I agree about the voices, but the OBCR just works better - IMO.

I say get both. The first one for Terrence Mann and the second for Racheal York. re: The Scarlet Pimpernel--which recording?

Well, I only want to ask for one. Would you say go with the OBCR?

Is there a way to piece together tracks from Encore, OBC, or any other English recording to get the best overall listening experience/"final" version of the show based on this synopsis?

Wow, a Wildhorn show thread that has not said how awful his shows are on Broadway - lol. I saw the "first" version on Broadway and enjoyed it very much. I personally would vote for the OBCR.

Hard to believe but it did get a Tony nod for Best Musical. His next show got a Best Musical & Best Score nod.

It's pretty hard to put together a "complete" recording of Pimpernel -- "You Are My Home" has different lyrics now, Madame Guillotine is essentially a solo for Chauvelin (why they didn't have Rex Smith record this is beyond me), the finale is "When I Look At You" reprise, and the reprise you hear on the cast recording is just Percy, but is actually a sort of duet; there's some other reprises that went unrecorded (Storybook, tho similar to the Andreas version), "Into the Fire" before the duel, etc.

The "Encore" cast recording was supposed to be a compilation of the three cast (though I'm not sure if Ron Bohmer would've been recorded), so I assume Kudisch was supposed to sing Madame Guillotine, Bohmer/Carolee Carmello "You Are My Home" and the finale. Too bad. "Encore" is a pretty weak album - Terrence Mann has fantastic vocals on the first recording, which largely went unheard in the actual theatre for the larger notes.

They should make a movie out of this show, while they're doing movie musicals.

I'm always amazed by the popularity/"love" for this Wildhorn piece - I enjoy it, but find the plot so long and dragged out. If they could manage to condense it to like 100 minutes I think it could be a lot more enjoyable.

I saw a couple of different versions of this show and the first version was truly the strongest (and funniest). It was a shame they kept hacking it apart. I fell in love with the music from the concept recording and then fell in love with the show itself seeing the original cast in the first version, so those are the recordings I personally enjoy the most.

My sister, known for her malapropisms, went to see the show when it was touring quite awhile ago. She enjoyed what she accidentally referred to as "The Scarlet Pumpernickel." Sounds like an Agatha Christie mystery....

Warner Brothers did a cartoon called The Scarlet Pumpernickel, starring Daffy Duck as the SP. :) It had a disguised swashbuckling hero but was nothing like the original story otherwise.
