I have now seen every single Velma in the Broadway, Canada, and National touring productions of Hairspray. Susan Cella is the best Velma of all. There is no argument. When is she joining the broadway company?

Susan Cella is indeed my favorite in the role. I have found the other ladies to be uneffectiviely irritating in the role. Cella is very funny. I also loved the chemistry she had with Villanch. I hope she makes it to broadway withthe show. But something tells me he probaly makes more money on the road.

Cella will be with the tour for at least 5 more months. I do hope they move her to NY after that.

Dame, ditto! I agree that Sue Cella is a delightful,arrogant, prissy,vindictive and believable Velma. She makes you see why her daughter, Amber, is such a clone of her and how she molded her thru the years to be the "bitchy teen-queen" and Amber is so clueless!(I like the way Jordan Ballard plays the role, she makes me laugh) She and Ballard on tour together were amazing and looked so much alike on stage. I too would love to see Sue Broadway Bound! thanks for this thtrad, do not know how I missed it.

I finally saw the show yesterday, and while this is somewhat off subject, I have to give my 2 cents worth...

This show is worthy of all the praise it recieves, I've never smiled so much in my life, and all I want to do is go back for more! I'm more than willing to stand up the entire time for a ticket, and that's nothing something I'd do for just any show.

Did you see it on the road or in NY? And Starlight; I agree. She has a full fledged character up there. Something which the other ladies playing the role have not been able to achieve. TAKE CELLA TO BROADWAY!

Sign me up. I happen to think that if she had originated the role on broadway she would have had a Tony nomination. Thats how good she is in it. Updated On: 10/10/04 at 02:20 PM

You know; members of the road company do read our posts. they are just not allowed to post back ( some nasty cast member got the producers to put a lid on it). CELLA; WE WANT YOU ON BROADWAY!

Perhaps I saw her on an off day? I thought her acting was wonderful, but she seemed ill in her voice. If her voice is normally as strong as her acting, I agree she should be brought to Broadway.

I was told she does the splits in the show, and it was put in purely because she can. Surely this will be a boon for all those dancers who will be lining up as replacements in future years.

I remember seeing her years ago in the touring Me and My Girl (with Tim Curry). Good performer.

Her voice is TRASHED!!!! Barbara Walsh is the BEST! Too bad she doesn't have more to sing.

Citi;
Her voice is not trashed. And to tell you the truth ; I didn't pay much attention to her voice. I was to involved with the wonderful comedic turn she was giving. Barbra Walsh is bland in the role. She doesn't even begin to touch Sue Cella. And I am curious; when did you see Sue cella do the role?

Dame;
I wouldn't put much weight on citis comment. ( I don't mean to offend you Citi; but after reading some of your posts you do seem a bit fanatical for anything or anyone in the NY company. ) It appears just to be of the "the person I saw was better than yours" mode. I bet you he only saw Walsh in it. But who knows. And he is entitled to his opinion.

But you are right. Cella is the best I have seen anyone in that role.

Shira;
i am curious as to where you saw her do it? I know there was a week in LA she was fighting some kind of cold ( according to one of the wardrobe ladies) Updated On: 10/15/04 at 07:43 PM

I also wanted to add that I think Walsh has a fantastic voice. but she can't act and her voice has no use in this role. Cella is just a better fit.

A friend of mine saw the new Edna last week in California. He liked John Pinette (sp?) and said he kept on forgetting that it was a man playing the role. He said John was not as over the top as Bruce was though.

By the way, did anyone see Susan Cella as Eva Peron when she was in Evita on Broadway? I believe she was either the understudy or the matinee Eva at one point.

I saw Cella do Evita a few times. She was wonderful. My favorite was when she took over for Jane Summerhayes in Me and My Girl. I hope they transfer her to broadways Hairspray comapny soon. Even though I imagine she is makingmore money on the road.

broadwayguy2 will be seeing Susan Cella as Velma in just a few short weeks.

Yes, major tours and broadway productions work under the same contract and make the same pay scale, though on tour, they also recieve a perdiem.

Oh I knew that. But I am assuming Ms cella has gotten herself a nice deal. This is a woman that does not need the work or money.

Barbara Walsh is Broadway royalty! but yes she is bland in that role. it's time for her to move on to something that fits a little better.

BroadwatMatt;
I agree with you 100%. She is so bland in the role. Anyone know how much longer she has on her contract? She needs to move on.
