The Hitchcock, the BBC-1978 or the book. Which do you prefer?

And I'm pretty sure she's the same actress who played Big Mamma in CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF. Nothing like the old actresses.

I loved the movie so much until, as part of my film studies degree, I had to study it to within an inch of its (and my) life. By the time I had finished a 12,000 word essay on it, I never wanted to see it again.
Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

There was a six part series done for BBC in the late seventies. It was amazing and seems to be lost now or at least not released. Anna Massey was an amazing Mrs. Danvers. Vivien Pickles whom I loved in "Nicholas and Alexandra", as
Mary Queen of Scots for the BBCs "Elizabeth R" and
"Harold and Maude" plays Beatrice.

The movie!!!

Check out the Criterion DVD with all the screen tests. Fascinating! It's weird to see how close Ann Baxter came to getting the female lead... and she was 16 years old at the time!! (yeeecchhh!) I'm glad they didn't cast her. That's a little too disturbing, if you ask me. Her tests were good, but she was TOO YOUNG. She comes of as more mature, because of her low voice. But you can tell she's not much more than a high school girl acting mature.

By the way, did you notice that the female lead is never referred to by name? She is called "I" in the script, because it's all first-person!

Yes and that is why I do not like the 90s TV version.
They had the nerve to actually show Rebecca and she didn't look at all as I had pictured her.
I love Maxim's wife in the 1978 BBC.

They showed Rebecca???

That's as bad as having a guy in a big white rabbit suit running round in "Harvey!"

BTW... of course they called "Rebecca" by her first name in the Hitchcock film, but it was the second Mrs. deWinter (Joan Fontaine) that was never referred to by her first name. She was a non-entity/nobody, referred to only as "I." This also helps psychologically, since everything revolves around Rebecca.

Yes, they showed her. She was in the dark but I saw the length of her hair and they really should not have done that. I always thought it was long by Mrs. Danvers description.
Oh yes, the 2nd Mrs. deWinter is "I" and "Maxim's wife".

Remember Agnes deGooch?

I read the book. I thought it was ok, not really my cup of tea. I mean, I wouldn't read it on my free time, but I guess it was pretty good.

Would you have voted for Jane Darwell over Judith for that Supporting Actress Oscar? Most of the time I pick Judith, but Jane does have that great goodbye scene with her ear bobs...

The movie is beautifully shot and costumed, but I gotta say, I find Miss Olivier to be a little boring...

I love the 1940 movie!!!!

I'm a huge Laurence Olivier fan...and this is one of my favorite of his performances. I also read the book, but I didn't see the BBC's version. So, my opinion is a bit biased.

I get the willies when I think about that Mrs. Danvers....she was amazing!!!!

A "villain" rarely if ever wins over a "noble" performance.

Darwell deserved her award... but Anderson created one of the most memorable screen villains in the history of film with Mrs. Danvers.

The musical version of "Rebecca" will open in Vienna in September.
It's from the same guys who wrote "Elisabeth" (maybe you know it...)!

Love the movie, and LOVE the scene where Danvers is caressing Rebecca's lingerie while explaining how "nuns in the monestary hand stitched them"...or something close to that.

Creepy, yet sexy at the same time. A stunning achievement.

re: Rebecca

God that was hilarious. I forgot all about that. Wishy-washy Carol, and evil Vicky and Harvey's dead-on Olivier.

They should release a DVD of just the Carol Burnett Show movie spoofs. Wouldn't that be great?

Not to totally jack this, but the Carol Burnett Show is very tough to get. They are worse than Disney at vaulting the dvds.

I do think they should have a movie spoof compilation and a musical number compilation...some of those were terrific!

Oh God, I completely agree! I loved The Carol Burnett Show, and the movie spoofs were some of my favorites! Especially Gone With the Wind and Mildred Pierce.
