Seeking thoughts on fall shows

Hey all,

Planning another trip to NYC in the fall, & would love to hear which shows you're excited about. I tend to gravitate toward meaty, substantial,emotionally powerful material, such as Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Other Desert Cities, Next to Normal, Glass Menagerie, Streetcar, Death of a Salesman, etc. If you have any suggestions for fall plays, I'd love to research them. Thanks!

The Band's Visit is a little different than those you listed, but I'd still recommend it, as a fan of all of those types of shows myself. 

 

I would keep an eye on Junk and The Parisian Woman, though not sure what they're really like, yet

Not sure if you meant PLAY as in any show, or literally a play.  In case its the second, The Band's Visit is a musical, but the buzz on it is quite strong.  (Your list only had one musical, so I wasn't sure.)

People Places and Things at St Ann's Warehouse might be the drama to catch this autumn. Denise Gough is supposed to be tremendous.

I really loved The Band's Visit, but I wouldn't call it "meaty, substantial,emotionally powerful material." Rather, it has a narrow scope and it's a small, ordinary story rendered beautifully. And funny, too. I think it's best to not know too much going into it but maybe if you're prepared for it to not be all that intense or weighty, you might enjoy it more. 

I can't comment on what I haven't seen but based on that list, I'd keep an eye on what people have to say about M. Butterfly, Cursed Child, Time and the Conways, and Illyria.

They're more melodramatic than Next to Normal (or at least, a different kind of melodrama) but I'd guess that Once on This Island and Carousel are the revivals that would appeal to you more than some of the others. Though My Fair Lady is great. 

There's nothing else that's been confirmed yet that I would suggest based on your list of preferred shows.

Thank you so much to all who've responded thus far. I had not yet heard of the Band's Visit, but will now be sure to learn more about it to see if it sparks my interest. Ditto People, Places & Things. Much appreciated. The Parisian  Woman definitely caught my eye in the little I've read about it. And I am curious about Junk. While I tend to gravitate more & more toward plays, I am also open to heavier musicals with substance, such as Next to Normal, Spring Awakening, & even Cabaret. I am intrigued by M. Butterfly, but already fear the ticket price, given that Clive Owen's going to star. Seems celebrity casting jacks the prices way up - sometimes too high for me.

MY FAIR LADY is a musical comedy. A great one; some even argue the greatest one. But very much a comedy by any definition.

PRINCE OF BROADWAY is a revue and has nothing to do with what the OP asked for.

M. BUTTERFLY is a tragedy and should be a wrenching one. But as I've said elsewhere, I don't trust director Julie Taymor. I agree with the poster who wrote above that the OP should check the reviews when they come out.

GavestonPS: Yes, you are right. My Fair Lady & Prince of Broadway are not what I'm seeking.

Meanwhile, I just read a brief summary of People,. Places. & Things & am VERY interested.

Will take the advice re keeping an eye on the reviews for M. Butterfly. While I certainly take reviews with a large grain of salt, I do find them helpful sometimes, especially if everyone seems to agree a show is a dud, & articulates why in a thoughtful manner.

Just to be clear, Hope, M. BUTTERFLY is one of the greatest plays of the late 20th century. It is not just about the tragedy of one man, but the tragedy resulting from America's view of itself.

The original director added (with the playwright's permission, I assume) spectacle between the scenes. The play itself is as intimate as ANTIGONE and, IMO, the spectacle didn't overwhelm it. But as you probably know, Julie Taymor is known for plays and films where the visual overwhelms everything else. Hence, my reservation about the upcoming production. (There's no other reason why Clive Owen shouldn't be great.)

Torch Song Trilogy (now just called Torch Song) will have a revival also. Not sure I'll be able to fit it into my schedule with the other shows I plan to see over my five nights. But with Mercedes Ruehl and Michael Urie in the cast, it's a definite contender. Not sure if that appeals to you, but it might meet your criteria if you don't mind some humor mixed with your pathos. 

On a side note, I stayed after Buyer and Cellar when it was playing off-Broadway in the Village and met Michael Urie. I was the only one who waited the hour (was feeling quite stalkerish by then) or so for him and he couldn't have been nicer. He's one of the nicest, if not the nicest, (it's a close race between him and Anthony Rapp) Broadway celebrities I've ever met. Sorry for the long side note, but most people in my life don't know much about Broadway and don't get my Broadway geekdom. Lol
