Barbara Cook Has Passed |
A true gem. Her talent will be sorely missed, but her contributions will not be forgotten.
I know Barbara Cook has been in declining health the past few years, but this a loss to the entire theater community. RIP, Ms. Cook.
Rest In Peace, you absolute legend.

I think JB means its NOT in the NY Times yet... I just looked
AP has confirmed. Ms. Cook is, indeed, gone. One of the greatest voices in the history of musical theater.
Just got a text from a friend about Barbara Cook...it hit hard. I am so very glad I got the chance to see her in concert many times. I even met her once in a London hotel.
I got into my car a few weeks ago and turned on the radio. NPR was doing a piece on Barbara and I was so relieved to realize she'd not passed.
The AP also reported that her last meal was vanilla ice cream.
My heart just shattered.

I was about to write this. Almost started to tear up. Perfect last meal!
One of my all-time favorite performers- have seen her many times- the Lincoln Center concert years ago stands out as one of the highlights of my theater going life. I was looking forward to seeing her a few years back in a show that ended up being cancelled- and I was very disappointed not to be able to see her again. Love her and will miss her.

I'm so grateful for all this wonderful woman and phenomenal talent brought us. And that we have this board to share our feelings of loss with others who share our gratitude for all that Barbara Cook was and is.
She Loves Me was one of my first shows as a kid and I remember Barbara's unbelievable voice and I can still hear her classic comic timing on certain lines. What a honor to have seen her live a number of times in many venues. Rest In Peace, you will always be treasured.

Such sad news.
I just rewatched the Kennedy Center Honors Tribute when she was honored in 2011 the other night. "Make Our Garden Grow" with Audra McDonald always does me in. For those who haven't seen it before.

I love this performance. Even though the song was written by Amanda McBroom, you believe it's about Barbara...

There were bells on a hill
But I never heard them ringing
No, I never heard them at all
Till there was Barbara Cook.
Barbara, you truly opened my ears with your gift. Thank you.

I am in my early 70's; I was fortunate enough to see Ms. Cook in most of her early musical theater work. She was totally natural in the zany roles of Ado Annie and Carrie Pipperidge in City Center revivals of Oklahoma and Carousel (Florence Henderson was Laurie, and Jo Sullivan Julie in the respective productions). A year later I saw her playing the somewhat zany and impressionable Amish young woman in Plain and Fancy. About the same time, I was watching a TV production of Babes in Toyland---the ingenue, playing the romantic lead with great conviction, looked familiar to me, but I could not place her. When I read the cast list at the end of the show, and saw that the ingenue's name was--Barbara Cook-- I was stunned, I simply could not believe it. And I think that was what was amazing about her early career, how effortlessly she transitioned from the comedy leads to the leading lady roles. And yes, she was wonderful as Marian Paroo in the original Music Man, her journey, played off Robert Preston's remarkable Harold Hill, from her original rejection, to her realization that he was the one for her, was unforgettable.
