I've heard MANY times Bette's secretary is signing Playbills and opening fan mail for her and she's just announced she's leaving January next year. I've been having second thoughts about sending to her for quite some time now and I don't know if I should. I would really love to send to her, but it's not a very good feeling to hear it's her secretary signing things and opening things for her.

I'd go for it. Even if it's not Bette reading your mail, it's still a good thing to get noticed by professionals. Who knows? She might just see yours, you never know.

I'd be more shocked if Bette was doing all of that herself...

Do people still have "secretaries"?  Isn't the position called an assistant, or an executive assistant?

Bette has an assistant who handles all of her correspondences and edits what Bette see's.  Easier to have someone filter out the junk and bring to her attention anything worthy of attention.  Does Bette sign some things herself?  Absolutely.  I myself don't respond to all my emails.   My assistant filters out the nonsense.  Answering emails would take me 6 hours if I looked at each one.  Um, no thank you.

Well, she follows in the footsteps of the original Dolly, Carol Channing. When Ms. Channing toured in the late 1970's her wig man / assistant signed everything for her. You had to leave it at the stage door and it could be picked up after the show. Tiv had a pretty great Carol signature too. I always wonder when I see her signature, if it's a real one or a Tiv.

The last one to do that was Joan Crawford, and she's long gone.
