Director's Cut of DREAMGIRLS film to be released

PRE-ORDER, RELEASE DATE: TBA https://www.amazon.com/Dreamgirls-Blu-ray/dp/B074HXBDJX

Director Bill Condon shared a secret in a recent interview with Collider. The Oscar winning music biography Dreamgirls has an Extended Cut ready to go. Initially, the interview was about The Fifth Estate and that this film would not get a longer version later on. As a counter example, Condon named the 7-year-old Dreamgirls starring Beyoncé in a lead role.

Said Extended Cut of the movie prolongs the theatrical version by nearly 20 minutes and Condon would like to see it being released. However, that's a decision that he can't influence. Paramount has the final say. Maybe the 10 year anniversary is a date that the film's fans can anticipate.

Um, that article is dated October 13, 2013 - almost 4 years ago.

That's a fan created cover created for the Amazon entry that has not release date posted.

Bill Condon's wishful hope doesn't make for reality right now.

The pre-order was listed on Blu-ray.com and I've never known them to list anything fake. And I've never known Amazon to take orders for a fake release, either. Although I have ordered things with no release date before (Harvey on Blu-ray). I'm not sure why the above poster thinks the cover art is fake, either. It looks pretty in line from what I've seen of other BD's.

Article is dated 2013.  Its 2017.

The films's 10th anniversary which would have been an obvious marketing angle for Paramount was 2016 - LAST YEAR!

There's 2021 for the film's 25th anniversary.  Let's all hold our breaths together.  We CAN do it.  We CAN make it happen as a group.

Blu-ray.com lists countless of things on specs.  They've had an entry for WILL & GRACE: The Complete Series on Blu-ray for almost 10 years now.

Also, on these spec entries of none-officially announced titles, Amazon doesn't charge you so legally they can't be prosecuted for false advertisement.  They have the DVD of FEUD: Bette & Joan as a pre-order when there hasn't even been an official announcement of a release date yet.

20 minutes of added footage isn't enough to save this mess of a film that absolutely gutted the brilliant score.

Can't link to it because I'm at work, but Jennifer Hudson and paramount's home video twitter just tweeted confirmation that it's coming on 10/10!

Totally agree.  First mistake was turning into spoken dialogue what was sung-thru on stage.  DREAMGIRLS on stage was almost like an operetta.  Bill Condon's first "sung-thru" moment happens in the "Family" number completely random so the audience wasn't prepared.  The 2 separate audiences I saw the film with laughed when "Family" started and the actors were singing their dialogue.  All the previous musical numbers earlier in the film were performance numbers so this out-of-the-blue dialogue singing didn't go over well with audiences who didn't know DREAMGIRLS was originally done that way.  Lucky "It's All Over" was kept as diehard DREAMGIRLS freaks would have murdered Condon had it been left out but again... regular folks not aware that's how DREAMGIRLS was originally, didn't know what to make of these talk-singing moments.

To me the biggest oversight was not having a HUGE Las Vegas production number to open the Act 2 of the film - just like it is on stage.  Showing Deena Jones in mega-star performance and showing us how HUGE she's become.  What did Bill Condon give us?  A campy Beyonce sitting in a screening room smoking a cigarette as she watches newsreel footage of Deena Jones and The Dreams' career.  Really Condon?

That didn't happen at all in the sold-out house when I saw the film.  At any rate, if it doesn't have Anika Noni Rose singing Ain't No Party, I'm not interested.  That was the single most shameful cut in the score.

In this new cut, are we going to get to see Condon directing Hudson within an inch of her life?  Doing 150 takes takes and angles of her solo songs just to ensure he could edit her performance into something award-winning?

I sure hope so!  :)

Ouch!  So well put.  Everyone in the film loved those frequent 2 week production shutdowns in the schedule so Bill could give one-on-one acting tutorials to Ms. Hudson where he broke down to a centimeter her line-readings, etc.  This was well documented at the time.  The filming of "And I Am Telling You..." could be a book in itself.  The shooting marathon it took to film and I believe it was filmed once early in production, then Bill chose to reshoot the whole thing again at the end of production.  Hudson's performance was created to Oscar winning perfection during the editing of the film.

I'm trying to remember...did they film Anika Noni Rose singing "Ain't No Party" or not? If the new footage includes that....I will at least look for it clipped on YouTube.

The film was the first time I ever saw Dreamgirls really thought it was a huge mess, thankfully saw the London production that set everything right.

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian
