With no disrespect to the above, exactly what is keeping Cher from being honored?

Agreed, but the idea of highlighting Archie Bunker with Trump in attendance is...interesting.

^ Maybe that's what's stopping them from honoring Cher, to answer madbrian's question. Although they really should have done it sooner. Still no Liza, either. Kennedy Center Honorees, Class of 2017 I was sure my nomination would have swung it for her this year. The lousers. They can shove it.

Thanks for clarifying; I simply skimmed the first part of the article so, of course, missed the whole point of the article. 

"The president doesn’t actually pick the honorees—if he did, he’d probably try to retroactively recognize his achievements in catchphrases for The Apprentice—but he does host the party ahead of the ceremony. Lear is prepared to reverse his decision if Trump changes his. That’s probably not going to happen, so Lear says the president of the Kennedy Center understands why he’s going to miss out on that part of the proceedings."
