David Moscow shares on-the-set secrets from 'Newsies' (1992); plus stories about Mos Def & Lin-Manuel Miranda

This year, 2017, marks the 25th anniversary of Disney's ''Newsies'' (1992), so what better time for David Moscow, the original Davey, to recall the highlights and hijinks from filming that cult classic that became a Broadway hit? Moscow remembers how a young Mos Def helped him land his dance audition; how he became best buds with Christian Bale from sharing a movie trailer, and how he went toe-to-toe with Oscar winner Robert Duvall, who played Pulitzer. 

But there's much more to Moscow than ''Newsies.'' This kid from the Bronx hit it ''Big,'' playing the younger version of Tom Hanks in that 1988 comedy. And he made his Broadway debut with Faith Prince, and Moscow was the original producer of "In the Heights."

Did anyone get to attend the free outdoor screening of the new filmed stage version of ''Newsies'' on Monday night (July 31) in da' Bronx? ''Newsies'' Broadway cast members Tommy Bracco, Adam Kaplan and Liana Hunt were part of the pre-show, and I heard Adam did a dynamite job with ''Santa Fe,'' and that he and Liana sounded sensational singing ''Something to Believe In.''

I actually tipped off David Moscow, who's FROM the Bronx, about this special ''Newsies'' event in his old borough. And the original Davey said, ''That's wild. It's around the corner from where I grew up.'' Unfortunately, David couldn't make it there Monday night because of his travel plans, but he was so happy to hear about it.

Just as ''Newsies'' hits movie theaters for two more encore screenings today (Aug. 5) and Wednesday (Aug. 9), comes the news that Music Theatre International is testing a ''Newsies Jr.'' version. Peter Filichia reports that it's an ideal candidate for schools because it's a family musical with lotsa roles for teens and tweens. This less than one-hour version even includes girl ''Newsies.''
