Hi

My name is Nader Valian, I write under the pen name Alexander J. Valnad, and I am a playwright, librettist, composer, and lyricist and member of the dramatist's guild of America. I have a hundred ideas for musicals, and over the next twenty-five days, I will post four ideas each day, with hopes of finding collaborators and people who support my ideas to promote them before I write them for the stage. Many of these shows I've begun, with several songs and scenes written. Here's the first four: 

 

I Miss You, Matthew D'Aubigne

Matthew D’Aubigne’s job is to dot “I” and crosses “t” on labels, but one day his boss tells him they don’t need him because they’re going digital. His family, his neighbor, his butler, everyone seems to be a lot better without him, so similar to “It’s a Wonderful Life”, he goes to his house, and wishes he was never born, gets drunk, and come act two, he dreams what everyone would be like if he wasn’t around. He wakes up at the end of act two, hungover, and runs back to everyone, and tells them how sorry he is for not being there. Although no one took notice of his very short absence he doesn’t care, he’s glad to be back home. The musical ends with a scene with Matthew and his neighbor, Helen, she never could tell him how she felt (because she’s the strong type), but she gives him a letter without dotted I’s, and crossed T’s, and he takes notice of this, and she says “you can complete it”. A little girl says to her mom, “mama, teacher says every time a man completes a woman’s letters, an angel gets its wings”. The mother says, “Your teacher’s full of ****. Take your father, he left me, now I have five kids to take care of, angel my ass”.  The butler closes the show as they go upstairs to make love, and all the other guests leave.

Based on a real event and party that took place at a southern Virginia college I visited a few years ago, The Spot is the name I gave the house, its real name I keep secret, but for those who will hear this, they will instantly know where I am talking about, who I am talking about, and what I am talking about. I met a young man in outpatient therapy, and we became friends, and he invited me to go to this house to meet his friends. The party was described sort of like “The Wild Party”, and ended with a student on campus committing suicide, much like “Dear Evan Hansen”, and the musical vibe I got from the people was a lot of “Cy Coleman”, “Lippa”, “Wildhorn”, “LaChuisa”. Also a lot of “Ahrens & Flaherty”. So I thought about writing a concept musical with lots of characters about this “cult-like” group, that follows the party and events of that weekend, which go into relationships, mental illness, drugs and alcohol, gender and sexuality issues, and being accepted.

Phineas Gage’s life is retold in a surreal series of fragments and flashbacks after his traumatic accident, as he struggles to retain his memory and identity, and deals with permanent brain damage. The seizures from his injury cause alarming, graphic moments that are depicted on stage as the brain would imagine the images of a brain. Phineas Gage’s absolute fight to the end is captured in a rock-and-roll opera, with postmodern music, and familiar themes from musical theater, that are distorted, and transition into other songs in a “tossed pastiche salad”, right up until the final devastating number.

A retelling of Svengali and Pygmalion, through the modernization of a crossed My Fair Lady and Phantom of the Opera, in a contemporary setting, with contemporary language versus the former, educational model. Can Sven turn Tillie into a classical, opera singer for his big showcase from a tone, deaf web so-called pop singer and teach her the beauty of music and language through his masculine charm, despite Tillie’s urgency that as a woman she will not succumb to a man? Is it about man or her sexual attraction to him that causes her to change?
